If you’ve ever wanted a visual representation of the word “desperate”, may I present to you this latest anti-gay marriage ad from a group called Nation For Marriage. As you’ll see, it features actors and actresses discussing their heartaches over laws allowing gays and lesbians to be married — while all the while lightning flashes and heavy, dark clouds swirl all around them in the background. What’s next? Blood-filled rivers? Death and destruction? These groups are an embarrassment to modern society. (For additional laughs, check out the outtakes from the auditions for this ridiculous PSA.)

    i find it really ironic that “a rainbow coalition…is coming together… to protect marriage” when the rainbow is a signifier to the gay community. also, they never explain HOW this is “threatening” their lives or “taking away” their “freedoms”.
    it seems like the oppression they are claiming comes from their own intolerance and unwillingness to be open-minded.

Here is another thing. who cares if you approve or not. it doesn’t matter what you think. if you think it is ok for you to have a right and other people not to then you clearly do not understand the basis for what this country stands for. this psa while disgusting will have no effect because it is so dumb and void of any kind of point. gay people didn’t “highjack” the rainbow. the rainbow flag is a flag symbolizing unity.

    Nothing really new here. We get something like this every time we try to tax or regulate some sheltered industry, or before elections (picture old people whining about how the Democratic nominee is going to take away their SS or Medicaid). Looks like a typical RNC- coordinated PAC ad. Only thing different is that they are branching into social(religious) issues.
    Expect much more with the National Health issue (“They’re taking away my doctor!”, “I’ll lose my freedom of choice!”; “I have to sit by while they tell my child in school that socialized medicine is a good thing!”).

    A laughably desperate attempt to ‘scare’ the confused and intolerant. After reading NRO’s anti-marriage editorial — I really like what one anonymous person had to say:

    woodenpickle–homosexual behaviors are common among non-human animals, done to foster social bonds. And there are lots of things humans do that are not natural, such as drive cars, live in buildings, wear clothes, etc.

    TMAN got it right–marriage is a social construct and has changed over the centuries. Allowing Ellen and Portia’s marriage to have legal weight won’t damage the institution any more than Britney “Married on an Impulse” Spears, “Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire,” “Married by America,” “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette,” and a pretty high divorce rate in the U.S. will.

    I always find it surprising that those fighting to “protect the sanctity of marriage” don’t instead put their money into campaigns against TV shows like “The Bachelor” and (previously) “Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire.” Devaluing marriage to a gameshow prize does more to hurt the institution than REAL love between two men or two women ever could.

    Ugh, this ad made me so mad. As a straight female who was taught by many gay teachers, gay marriage has absolutley no impact in my life. And the part when the mother said, “schools are teaching my child that gay marriage is ok.” First, I was not taught about marriage in school, and second, teachers should be teaching that EQUAL marriage rights for all is good.
    I am still suprised that straight couples really feel gay marriage will affect them. It won’t and they don’t want it to, they just want to have the happiest day of their lives start with equal marriage rights.

    The catholic religion condemns the use of condoms! They say people should practice abstinence!!! They prefer that thousands of people with STD infect other people than to use comdoms… They know people will always have sex! At least they should advise them to practice safe sex.
    Also the Vatican has so much money that they could actually help end poverty and hunger. But do they truly do it? NO! No way in hell they’re going to give away all their money to help people! But wouldn’t that be the will of christ?
    Instead, they battle against condoms!!!

    What about radical muslims? In Afghanistan, for instance, they want to pass a law that forces a woman to have sex with her husband whether she wants to or not, and also forbidding her to leave the house without her husband’s permission. What kind of marriage is that?

    And what about certain countries where men are allowed to have several wives but women can’t have more than one husband?

    And I could go on…

    Therefore, arguments such as ‘marriage is between a man and a woman’ and that ‘marriage is sacred and should be protected’, accordingly to god, allah or whatever, are nothing but a load of crap!

    These arguments are only used by religions and radical groups in order to control people by making them follow their rules. This way it’s easier to ‘zombify’ people… as if we don’t have enough of that already!!

    Why is the truth of these groups and religions the ‘real truth’? Why? Because they say so? Did god himself (and why are god, allah, etc. male figures and not female…? – maybe because they were invented by men?) say that?

    The bible? Where are the original texts from which all bibles were translated? Do you know what translating means? Do you have any idea how a source text, particularly a metaphoric text like the bible, can be altered if a translation is badly done? So the bible means very little to me…

    What about one of the 10 commandments – “Thou shall not kill?” Isn’t it strange that a perfect being like god didn’t specify “killing what?” Isn’t it ambiguous? Or did (s)he mean not killing any living creature? Therefore all christians, at least, should be vegetarian…!

    And humans consider themselves superior to animals!
    HAHAHA, don’t make me laugh!!!

    Oh and BTW although it seems I’m against all religions, that’s not true! What I’m against is ignorance!
    I don’t have a religion but I’m a very spiritual person (interpret it as you wish).

      Love is important, but many poeple feel that THEY decide what “love” is. For that matter, what “good” is. As far as I can see ALL states approve domestic partnerships giving poeple who live together legal rights parallel to marriage. The reason it is an issue that you don’t understand with regard to religious people who know there is one true God, is because you do not want equal rights. You have it now. You are going after Holy Matrimony. The same one defined by God in the Judeo-christian bible. You want your domestic partnership to be recognized as “OK” by God regardless of what the scriptures actually say about it and many other things. Do you seriously think that if you win your abilility of mankind to consider same sex as a covenant before the same God who condemns it that it would make any difference to God. Why are you not happy with just having the rights to be together. Why must you push hard for the pastor and church setting? Your conscience itself will testify against you.
      Atheist, religious, or agnostic, the questions you post about the bible are easily found if you are looking for an answer. In my opinion though, an atheist can’t find god for the same reason a thief can’t find a cop. There are MANY references in the bible defining “thau shalt not kill”. Consider this though, Jesus himslef said that hatred IS murder and that lust IS adultery. The law never saved anyone, it’s purpose was to expose what is truly in us. You may choose to be with someone of the same sex but the bible is very clear that God is not for it and anyone who calls themself a christian or a priest or a pastor and teaches otherwise is, again according to the bible, a heretic with deceitful motives. I do not say these things because I don’t like you, I say the same to liers, thieves, and blashphemers who are all violating the same standard that god has set. Yes I even judge myself.

    This is why the government should only issue civil unions. Rewrite all the laws to say civil union instead of marriage, and let the church perform a marriage ceremony.

    That way, Gays get all the legal protection afforded to civil unions, and dumb idiotic conservative christians can turn around and tell their children that those people aren’t married.

    I’m really over the whole “If everyone were gay, the human race would die out” argument.

    Extending that line of reasoning, should people who are infertile be denied marriage rights? I mean, if we were all infertile, the human race would die out.

    If I didn’t feel that people getting married at drive through chapels in Vegas threatened my marriage, then I don’t see how Adam and Steve shacking up is going to affect my life in any way.

    And your poor kids thinking homosexuality is normal? They already think 50 hour marriages are normal. That going on a reality show to find a husband is normal, or that cheating on your spouse is normal. How is having gay people that actually WANT to be married and committed to each other giving your kids the wrong idea?

    The argument that redefining marriage is somehow wrong is equally ridiculous. Marriage has been repeatedly redefined throughout the years. And it is NOT historically “between a man and a woman”. At several points throughout history, it has been between a man and SEVERAL women. Since our parents didn’t arrange our marriage, and my father didn’t have to pay out a dowry for me on our wedding day, I’d say redefining marriage to be more in line with our current culture has gone quite well.

    Personally, I’ve always seen religious marriage and legal marriage as two very separate things. I don’t need a piece of paper to tell me that I’m committed to a person, but I do need that piece of paper if I want certain rights. If churches want to not recognize or perform gay marriages, I think that’s well within their rights. Much like many churches won’t marry people if their spouse is of another religion (say, you’re Jewish and your spouse-to-be is Catholic). It’s their right to do that. But the state should be required to.

      A poor argument I’m afraid. Usually when a person lacks content they use a lot of explicatives like it makes it more important or true. No dice. Also, the muslim bible and the catholic/christian bible both have the Torah which is the first five books of the bible including genesis, exodus, levitecus, numbers, and deuteronemy, so actually, YES the Muslims get the sanctity of marriage from the same source as Christians and Catholics. It doesn’t look intellectual when you site things you obviously haven’t read past the first page. Hypocrates!

    Sickening! Hypocritical! What freedom are they talking about that is taken away from them? Where are they coming from? It is all so simple.     inalienable rights. Among these are enjoying and defending life and
    liberty, acquiring, possessing, and protecting property, and pursuing
    and obtaining safety, happiness, and privacy.” in the beginning, but then further down ” Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or
    recognized in California.” How hypocritical is that?

    Also:
    The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ratified in 1976, and agreed to by 47 countries, was passed in order to stop discrimination and the abridging of human rights unconditionally. This bill was ratified by the United States, therefore the protection extends over all US citizens. This declaration states in article two that “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.” Obviously, this includes all people, including homosexuals. This means that any statement on this declaration about marriage or civil unions includes those who are attracted to those of the same gender.  Article one states that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” This article clearly states that making laws that create unequal rights is clearly illegal. The part of this historic and immensely important document that concerns marriage is article sixteen. “Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.” When laws like Amendment Two (Florida) and Proposition Eight (California) are passed, they are not only unconstitutional but also highly discriminatory and illegal through international law.
    And:
    The first amendment of the constitution, which addresses religious freedom and freedom of speech and the press, states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” The part that states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment” means that congress is forbidden to make a law that is based off of religion, meaning that bills such as Proposition 8 and Proposition 102 were unconstitutional before they were even voted on.  The States were founded on the basis of separation of church and state. Also, the fourteenth amendment firmly addresses citizen’s rights: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the
    laws.” This amendment means that you cannot abridge the right of any citizen in any way. Banning gay marriage is cutting off the right to marry of a certain group of citizens. Marriage is an aspect of life, so California, Florida, and Arizona and denying people life by banning gay marriage. As clearly stated in the US constitution, banning gay marriage is illegal.
    This ad is infuriating and reveals the true idiocy behind religion.

      Good point about the hypocracy at the begining there. It is simple and it has to do with morality. it is the same thing for abortion issues. Many poeple are not ready to change from the indecent sinful acts of one man sleeping with another man sited in the bible to making it morally ok now. i’m sure it will happen soon though. I wonder if they are going to lower the age limit for pedifiles too? makes you wonder though what is the standard for morality and where does it stop? A rapist is only doing what he feels is good for him. A liar is lying because it’s easier than getting in trouble for the truth, and a pedifile enjoys children sexually more than adults and that is their pursuit of happiness. Gays or not if we can’t live in harmony what is the use of being here in the United States of America. This is the melting pot not one big Church. Religion is yours to practice and yours to keep do not to push onto others and try to regulate your faith on other people and someones freedom. No physical or violent harm is result of allowing gays to marry. So let it just be. Be cool, and be open minded… once you shut the door you have lost the ability to respect and learn.

    I have never met anyone with such small mindedness. Oh and Hector, to be quite honest: homosexual behavior IS normal. No it’s not the sacred “social norms” that many of us have been subjected in the past, but it doesn’t make it “wrong.” I’m a firm believer that you CAN be born gay, and if my 5 year old son decides he likes to wear dresses then by God let him wear dresses, who is it hurting? Absolutely no one. I’m tired of the homosexual community being persecuted against and feeling the need to hide their true sexuality. Marriage is a constitution that is said to be between a man and a woman because of RELIGIOUS affiliation, I believe the United States Constitution calls for separation of church and state — when are we going to start listening to that?

    Marriage in the sense of the word varies greatly from culture to culture, religion to religion. There is no right definition because of this variation so why not accept a universal definition of “a union between two people in the bonds of love and commitment.”
    Who gives two shits if they are the same sex? It changes nothing about the feelings between them nor the way it effects the rest of society.

    Please, I’m just asking for every person regardless of sexual orientation to be able to stop calling their lovers “roommates” and finally having the equal opportunities that heterosexuals enjoy.

      Just as you state, homosexual behavior is just that…a BEHAVIOR, and behaviors are not afforded rights.
      You are a FIRM believer that people can be born gay? On what pretext? What evidence? Oh…wait…there is none. Again, it is a BEHAVIOR that goes against thousands of years of tradition. Yes, gays have been around for thousands of years as well, but have “hidden” just as they should – they have known full well that it has always been wrong and against nature and that is why they have hidden. Now they come out of the closet only because of all the other rights movements over the last 4 decades…and for some reason, they think they’re BEHAVIOR should be afforded rights. Blacks and women were given rights to vote and be equals because they are just that…EQUAL human beings. It has nothing to do with behavior. In addition, just because people are against gays and their new-found demands for “special” rights, does in no way whatsoever, make them small minded. It makes them smart…smart to push out the vile behavior that has spread more cases of AIDS in this country than all other activities combined.
      As far as how it impedes on our freedoms…well, there are several ways. A couple of them are…#1 With the legalization of homosexual marriage, every public school in the nation will be required to teach that this perversion is the moral equivalent of traditional marriage between a man and a woman. We will be forced to publish men/men and women/women relationships in our children’s school text books, even as young as kindergarden. I’m sorry…but that is beyond disgusting, never mind what it will do to their poor little brains besides confuse the hell out of them. #2 Parents will be FORCED to teach/accept this perverted lifestyle to foster children.
      All in all, a behavior that has been oppressed for thousands of years, should not be afforded any rights. After all, it has been oppressed and regarded as wrong for obvious NATURAL reasons.

    You pro gay rights people really need to listen more. Just because people say no to gay marriage dosen’t mean they are anti-gay, that is your own ignorance that leads you to that conclusion.

    And you non-homosexual gay rights activits really need to take your head uot of your asses and read, clearly and be open minded, not just say you are and think just because you are a gay rights activist that you are automatically right.

    Those people who voted Yes on Prop 8 arent against gay-marriage, for the majority part, but for protecting a union that has been sacred for thousands of years. If you gay people want to have a similar union so be it. call it garried, have all the same rights. But dont make heterosexuals redefine what is theirs for a select few.

    There is the olympics and for the handicap there is the special olympics.
    See instead of having the normal athleats skip on one leg in order to make it fair for the ones with a handicap, they just made another event, called the special olympics with people who do have handicaps.
    Pretty easy solution no ? and everybody is happy.

    The biggest problem I see with anti-gay propaganda is that most of them always quote the bible.
    The bible says its wrong, so its wrong. That’s the general argument that they’re throwing out there. But at the same time, they’re hypocritically spitting in the face of their own faith.
    If Christians/Catholics believe, that the Bible is the true, 100% word of God, and that God is infallible, then they should not be picking and choosing what laws to follow, and ignoring the ones they don’t like.

    It is hypocritical for a religious zealot to spout about homosexuality is wrong because the bible says so, and some even go as far as saying that gays should be killed, because the bible says so, while within the same few pages of the bible, it says that: shaving, eating shrimp (shellfish), polyester, and working on Saturdays are also abominations onto the Lord.

    If they want to argue that gay marriage is wrong because the bible says so, then lets see them picket barber shops and the Red Lobster.

    Let us not forget, the bible itself is wrought with contradictions.

    Thou shalt not kill, is suddenly usurped with, “Thou shalt not kill, except for the gays, disobedient children, rape victims, women who don’t bow in church, prostitutes, and that village over there, go kill them, sell the children to slavery, and rape the virgins, call the rape marriage, it’ll be fine.”

    Marriage is not a sacred institution. Not in a country with shows like “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” and “Who wants to Marry a Millionaire.”

    Heterosexual marriage has a 50% divorce rate. A higher rate of spousal abuse, spousal rape, child abuse and child molestation.

    Heterosexual marriage also has a high rate of extramarital affairs.

    Now, I’m not saying marriage is bad. But, what I am saying, is that marriage is not sacred. It never was, it never will be. It is the union of two people , who want to be together, due to feelings of love for one another.

    Let me put it this way:

    Somewhere out there, two hormonal teenagers are having pre-martial sex. Right now. They’re doing the dirty, doing the do.

    You didn’t know about it before. Your marriage or relationship was fine. Your credit score was fine.

    But now that you know that two horny lovebirds are about to get their freak on, did your credit score plummet? Did you come down with some incurable disease?

    No. Why? Because the choice of two people, who are in no way connected to you, has no bearing, or weight on your life.

    Do the world a favor, and mind your own damn business.

      You are wrong about the effect. Will she get a desease? Will he? can they afford health care for it? Will she get pregnant? Can he take care of a family? Do they pay taxes? Do they have an education? Where will they live? What will a young teenager who is still learning about life teach a child? The bible, for your enjoyment, also says that the road is NARROW and few find it that leads to life. The road that leads to destruction? you guesses it, WIDE OPEN! There are no doubt, many hypocrates, that in no way disproves that God established a marriage between one man and one woman as a covenent and specifically addresses the other option. No one ever followed the law perfectly, except one man. The purpose of the law is to expose sin (rebellion against God / lawlessness). Judge yourself to see if YOU indeed are a good person. Ever lied? Ever stolen anything? Disobeyed you parents? Cheated? hated? Looked with lustful intentions? If so, then you too are guilty.
      How about the hypocracy of God “showing up” at every atheist funeral or to blame when something bad happens? I guess he is just up there zapping poeple with bad stuff? Or maybe the one who created us, knows how we work best. When we don’t go his way (and we have that choice) and consequences happen(like he said it would) somehow we are arrogant enough to blame him.     I am appelled that people have nothing better to do in their meager lives then to worry about someone who they don’t know and telling them what to do? Who are you to judge me? Who died and made you boss of everyone else? Think about this, if marriage is a tradition and sanctified then why is it that men and women (who are straight and mariied) cheat on their spouses (I thought it was one man and one women; not one man ond five women)? I can’t call my boyfriend “husband” (didn’t know it was just designated to straight people), I have to say “partner”, “significant other,” “roommate” it is unfair.
