UK pop group Pet Shop Boys have rejected a request from PETA to change their name to the “Rescue Shelter Boys”. Obviously, there’s a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor there from PETA (though, no doubt, they may have been very serious) — but once again, they’ve done brilliant work in combining pop culture with their message. The story has been all over the place — bringing with it the issue of pet adoption and rescue. From the article,
“Peta Europe has written to Pet Shop Boys with a request they are unable to agree to,” reads a post on the band’s official website. But the band admits the request “raises an issue worth thinking about”. Peta’s letter requests the name change due to the cruelty which they allege takes place in the pet trade. If the band were to agree to the name change, it continues, it would “encourage your millions of fans to consider giving a home to an abandoned or unwanted animal from an animal shelter”.
Well, if anyone wants to jump on the “Rescue Shelter Boys” name, we’re sure you’ll have the full backing of every PETA member worldwide. You could even sing about rescuing animals, get invited to perform at gigs like the HSUS Genesis Awards, and win the hearts of ladies everywhere. We’re just saying…
