Ben Affleck isn’t the only celebrity fighting for the Congolese people.

Nicole Richie has just released a new video also urging people to support ending genocide, rape, and violence in the Congo. The actress begins her appeal saying, “I’m going to tell you a story about a place where grandmothers and babies are raped on a daily basis…and the reason they are being raped is directly related to the purchases of our cell phones, our laptops, and of our ipods.”

Richie then goes on to introduce Kimberly Pinkson from the Ecomom Alliance and John Pendergast from the EnoughProject.org. Both organizations are partnering to help drive suppor to end these atrocities. Richie writes on her website,

Please, I urge you to take the time to watch the film “The Greatest Silence”  (for info and purchase go to http://thegreatestsilence.org). The crisis in the Congo is fueled by conflict minerals, but I’ve included several steps below that we believe will also help to bring this vicious cycle to an end.  By using our power as consumers and activists, we ALL can make an impact!

  1. This video is not effective because its too long, shows no proven connection to cell phones and violence in Congo. Additionally what real are the real solutions? If the Congolese loose their mining trade will the violence only accelerate? I have so may unanswered questions and am not really persuaded by someone who states you did not hear anything about the environment 10 years ago. What about Al Gore, Rachel Carson, and the many others who have been talking about being green for decades. The celebrity green movement could be just another form of capitalism at its best. “Buy this green product and save the planet” I find it hard to take someone like Ms Ritchie seriously she may have all the money in the world but is she a well rounded and educated person?????

  2. Nicole is an avid fan of the reality TV show American Idol. Her current Season 9 favourite is contestant Allison Iraheta:
“About to watch American Idol. I hope Allison does well”

Please help Nicole vote to keep Allison in till the end!
