Looks like Disney’s effort to jump back into the documentary genre is paying off.
The company’s new division, Disneynature, launched its first feature film on Wednesday called EARTH and raked in more than $4 million at the box office. According to Variety, that’s enough for the largest opening-day gross ever for a documentary (excluding concert films). Even better, Disney did a clever marketing campaign by vowing to plant a single tree for every ticket sold to see the move opening weekend. At this rate, that’s a lot of green for both the pocket and planet.
Final weekend numbers will hit sometime Monday.
