I know it’s not even 10 a.m yet, but break out the champagne — we’ve got some celebrating to do!

In a historic vote, the European Union has closed its borders to products of cruel commercial seal slaughters, removing a primary market for Canada’s globally condemned sealing industry.

Ecorazzi has been vigilant in voicing our condemnation of the brutal Canadian seal hunt which takes the lives of hundreds of thousands of baby seals each year, and we’re so thankful to all the fantastic organizations and individuals who’ve worked hard to make this legislation possible.

According to the HSUS

“The EU was a primary market for Canadian seal products, and the Canadian government estimates the loss of the EU market will cost Canada’s sealing industry $6.6 million (CAD) annually. Given that the landed value of the Canadian seal hunt last year was less than $7 million, the implications are enormous. With this ban, the EU joins the United States (which outlawed seal products in 1972) and Mexico and Croatia, which ended the trade in 2006. Soon there will be nowhere left to trade the products of cruel commercial seal slaughters, and seals will be worth more alive than dead.”

While we all deserve a glass of champagne, let’s not get drunk. There’s still plenty of work to be done! The sealing industry is a sneaky trickster and thanks to generous government subsidies, the hunt isn’t quite over yet. If you haven’t already, visit the HSUS website and sign their petition to boycott Canadian seafood.

With YOUR continued hard work we just might be able to convince the Canadian government to pass a law ending this barbaric massacre forever. Let’s get ‘er done!

I am proud to be a european today. It is great news! finally a big blow to this cruel sealing industry/fur industry. They fought to the end, just check out their declaration of ethical seal harvest. that is just out there!

Clubbed the Sealing Industry right on the head! How fitting…

FYI : I heard that some OMEGA-3s were being made from seal oils. So check those labels! research your supplement company!

Baby steps, folks, baby steps. Hopefully, the sealing industry will be a thing of the past in a year or two.

This is SOOO great! It’s a big step but we can all do more – and we will!

  • Whoever…

    YES!!!

Oneandonlyhypnos, that makes two of us! :)

Now let’s see what excuse they will come up with to perpetuate that barbaric ‘activity’.

“the Canadian seal hunt last year was less than $7 million”? That’s ‘all’? Did I understand it correctly? They stubbornly want to keep an ‘industry’ alive which is ‘only’ worth 7M?

How stupid is that? The Canadian image abroad has been so much more damaged than what 7M could do for the country…!

They could make so much more if they invested on whale/seal watching or something…

Anyway, this one battle almost won! But we have so many more ahead… With patience, education and resilience, we will win them too!

    ;)

Iam Canadian. 4th generation. I want the seal hunt banned. Iam not working for or against it but dont agree with it. It is hard to change a peoples tradition of 150 years. Most Canadians have never seen in person one of the seals we are talking about. I have only been to two provinces in Canada. The one I live in (which is B.C.)and Alberta. The people who seal hunt in Canada other than Native peoples are VERY small in numbers.
It will become a thing of the past. The sooner that happens the better.
