“I know the strength that diversity has given my country – a country built by what some would now dismiss as asylum-seekers and economic migrants – and I believe we must persuade the world that refugees must not be simply viewed as a burden. They are the survivors. And they can bring those qualities to the service of their communities and the countries that shelter them.”

- Angelina Jolie speaking at a World Refugee Day event at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. Jolie is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and a public supporter of refugee rights. To learn more about the organization she supports, visit UNHCR.org

Nice job Angelina, but I’m a little tired of seeing celebs rather than some resourceful, caring, “average” people.

I recently read a post on GirlieGirl Army http://www.girliegirlarmy.com about this amazing woman who works for an adoption agency in NYC. She’s asking anyone that can help to forgo one night of cocktails and instead donate $$ that can help children in Africa buy food, mosquito nets, medical care etc…I think that everyone could afford to do this!

Unfortunately, Ariela, if the average viewer sees an average person making an appeal the average viewer will ‘turn away. Like it or not, the reality is the celebrity and/or known personality gets the viewers attention and thus is able to deliver the message. Whatever works . . .
