New reports are saying that Michael Jackson was so focused on getting ready for his upcoming 50-concert tour at London’s 02 Arena that he often forgot to eat during the day. As a result, says Randy Phillips — the promoter behind the concerts — Jackson’s caloric intake fell to dangerous levels. To get the singer something nutritious, he and director Kenny Ortega often cut Jackson’s food up into bite-sized potions so that he could be fed quickly. From the article,

“However, despite trying their level best to keep Jackson healthy, the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker survived on just one meal a day. Phillips revealed that Jackson continued his grueling rehearsal schedule eating meager portions of his favorite dishes-vegetarian lasagna, steamed broccoli, nut loaf or tofu with chilli sauce.“He used to forget to eat because he was so focused and Kenny Ortega and I used to cut up his food and physically feed him,” the Mirror quoted Phillips as saying.”

In his 1988 book, Moonwalk, Jackson says, “I’m a vegetarian now and I’m so much thinner. I’ve been on a strict diet for years. I feel better than I ever have, healthier and more energetic.”

According to some news sources, Jackson’s cause of death may have been linked to the very powerful drug Propofol — which is often used to place a patient under anesthesia before surgery. Full autopsy results are expected to take several weeks.

  3. is this really an image we want of vegetarianism?

  4. I think it’s GREAT that he was a vegetarian! I’m so bummed that he’s gone…

  5. While he did tend to eat a vegetarian diet he sadly took lots of drugs (even if they were prescription) that probably added to his health woes.

He was a brilliant musician though no doubt.

  8. Ecorazzi, I love your blog–but how is that someone’s seeming anorexia (or minimally severe caloric restriction) legitimates vegetarianism as a personal philosophy and mindful lifestyle?

  9. Most vegetarians have eaten meat at some point in their lives except those born into it. I’ve been vegetarian twice in my life including the last several years. When you have to eat out a lot because of work or travel, it’s quite challenging to find a variety of vegetarian (let alone vegan) offerings. Every day of not eating meet is less suffering and if MJ even had an awareness of the suffering the meat industry causes, he was a kinder soul than most. So rather than judging him and asking if this is the image we want for vegetarianism, I ask how many times each of us have helped others. How much have we given to sick children or animal causes?

I believe that MJ was a loving soul trying his best to make a change in the world. I also believe that if each and every person in the world worried about being the best person they could be rather than judging others, this would be a better place. I struggle daily with the desire to be a kind, loving spirit without being destroyed by the hurtful nature of most human beings.

  10. I agree with NewAgeGirl. Human beings have a very hurtful nature, which is probably why Michael Jackson shielded his children for so long. Quit judging! Think of how you’ve been judged about anything ever in your life time and how you felt. Worry about being the best person, the best human you can be. If you fall short of that look to those who do well as a role model.

  11. Michael Jackson was a vegetarian. The “KFC” reference that Magic Johnson referred to was from the early 80’s when he still ate chicken but gave up on red meat. By the time finished his Bad album was when he became a full vegetarian for ethic reasons.

  12. There are many types of vegetarian diets. It is up to the individual and registered dietician to make the proper food choices necessary for an exceptional performer to excel in his or her work. I have been a performer and dancer in the past. Believe me, after several rigorous hours of turns, jumps, leaps, sweat, increased heart rate, and heaving breathing you really don’t feel like eating. All you want to do is get some rest. And, peace and quiet, which, unfortunately, we just never let Michael Jackson do throughout his genius career. I pray he is at peace and can now sleep. I pray he is with ALL the ANGELS in heaven where he belongs. God Bless you and We Love you, Michael J. Jackson.

  13. scott, you’re wrong. magic was in the remember the time video, which is when he said he saw michael eating KFC. remember the time is on the dangerous album, which was after bad, so michael was not a full vegetarian at that point.

  14. Not that I don’t believe this stupid s**t but I LOVE Michael jackson so haters back off! R.I.P M.J Your family are in my prayers always except for that child beaten joe it’s not like he gives a damn and saying that I am right! God Bless HIS Children,Prince, Blanket, and most of all the darling girl,Paris!
