For most of us, it comes as no surprise that Naomi Campbell is set to appear in a new ad campaign promoting fur for designer Dennis Basso. The model long ago gave up pretending to have anything to do with a late-90′s PETA campaign decrying fur in the fashion industry. Her excuse, ridiculous as it seems, is because she doesn’t like the way the animal rights organization has since promoted the cause.
“When PETA started targeting (Vogue editor) Anna Wintour and (designer) Karl Lagerfield and putting dead animals on their plate, I felt that they went too far and I thought, I didn’t want to be a part of this campaign anymore,” she said in 2007. “(But) I do like wearing fur and I still do.”
Bullshit aside, it’s obvious that Campbell’s knowledge of how fur reaches the catwalk is about as deep as her moral convictions; which more than likely come with a price tag. Reports indicate that the 39-year-old signed a deal to star in the ads for somewhere around six figures.
