I like supporting vegan initiatives at new restaurants, but man, it would be hard to drag myself in there. I’m not sure I could do it. KFC, even without the animal cruelty, makes me feel nauseous.

I don’t think I would TRUST KFC. What is that analogue cooked with? Woudln’t it be just like employees to deliberately screw up the order and give me dead bird.

I think it’s really geared toward people who want to get less meat in their diets.

I agree with the three postings above. To visit KFC for a vegan sandwich would be to support KFC’s mission statement. They show little care for the welfare of the animals that feed their customers, and my money would go to support that, animal cruelty. Besides, i can make a damn good sandwich at home, with ingredients 100% animal free (because i check and double check labels). So no. I would not go to KFC for a vegan sandwich.

I agree with the above! It’s nice to have an option if the only thing to eat was KFC, but, to me, offering up a “vegan” chicken sandwich doesn’t make up for the millions of animals they torture and slaughter each year. But, that’s just me. However, I do appreciate the attempt…I guess…except it seems to just be a ploy at appeasing animal rights activists. I’d rather KFC change their production methods than offer me a sandwich.

I don’t think I could ever eat at a restaurant called “Kentucky Fried Chicken” regardless of what they served.

OK, I hear everyone, but let me play devil’s advocate for a second.

A few years back Burger King released a vegan burger that, while not the tastiest thing in the world, still gave people around the country a vegan option. Sadly, BK did not sell enough of the vegan burgers and went back to the ones made with dairy and eggs.

During the year or so they were around, every time I would pass a Burger King I would buy one. Did I always eat it? Not ALWAYS, but I wanted them to sell so that people around the country would at least have a totally vegan fast food option.

Was it the “right” move? I’m not sure. But I looked at it as taking one for the team and I was sad to see the product fail.

Dude, Burger King still has the vegetarian burger. I hit one up in Ithaca not too long ago and grabbed it after someone made the same argument you just did. Granted, we’re a pretty VEG-friendly town, so it might be completely dependent on the market in terms of availability.

I hear what you’re saying Michael Dudel. And perhaps if it was a different fast food joint, I’d be on board. But KFC has such an abysmal track record when it comes to animal welfare. It would just be hard to suck it up and give them money. Even though I hear your point and think it’s valid. I would hope other people would buy the vegan item at KFC, but I’m not sure I could do it myself. But then again, I buy Silk soy milk which is owned by Horizon – a huge dairy company. So, I’m not above it all either. Let’s just say, I’m happy KFC is offering a veg item but I won’t be snacking on it any time soon:)

KFC has a veggie chickenburger and now we should love and promote and support them for that ? its maybe a nice option for wannabe veggies who are now regular KFC customers but for already veggies it would be an awkward move to make KFC a regular choiche foreating out.
Sometimes we veggies are such cheapos, if they throw a bone, we roll over on command.

I think the introduction of the veggie chicken sandwich in Canada was part of the “deal” KFC struck with PeTA so the protests would stop. I live down the street from one KFC that has the faux chicken sandwich and to this date they have never advertised it in their window or on their signs. Maybe they don’t want it to succeed? The only people handing out those free coupons when it first appeared on their menu were PeTA volunteers. KFC’s business IS dead chickens so I won’t buy their veggie sandwich (besides, according to employees it’s cooked in the same oil as the dead birds).

I am Canadian, and a proud vegetarian. I have to admit I was surprised when I first spotted the veggie burgers at KFC – but I reluctantly tried them. They’re not bad. I have to say that it’s tough to walk in to a KFC (I’m even a little embarassed to do so). To my surprise, one day they were sold out of the vegan burgers. Well done, Toronto!

Sometimes a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do… when she’s pressed for time and hungry! At least it’s a step in a positive direction for KFC. But I really wish someone would just open up a fast food join with just vegan/vegetarian fare that was reasonably priced, quick and found pretty much everywhere like KFC, Burger King, and McDonald’s…. just a thought!

When McDonalds had a veggie burger about 10 years ago I ate it a few times out of teenage vegetarian desperation… but I felt guilty that I was supporting such an evil company. Would I do it today at KFC? Considering that fast food joints so rarely have fake chicken I might try it once, but the guilt is still there. I agree with KBVeg that we need a veggie fast food chain.

Hell NO! Unfortunately, I happen to live behind a KFC and the smell from that place is atrocious! It doesn’t matter what they are serving I know what is going on in there.

Unfortunately the KFC vegan option is not actually fully vegan or vegetarian, since they take it and cook it in the same oil they use to cook their chicken. It’s a great initiative, poorly executed.
