Nigel Barker, one of our all-time favorite seal hunt stoppers, went on the road earlier this week to celebrate a group of top chefs who are taking a stand!

The 70 chefs and restauranteurs above have one thing in common: they’re boycotting Canadian seafood until the seal hunt ends…FOR GOOD!

As many know, Canada’s annual commercial seal hunt is the largest commercial hunt of marine mammals on the planet and take the lives of hundreds of thousands of baby seals each year.

Thanks to a recent ban of seal products passed by the European Union and the work of many activists around the country, this year fisherman only managed to slaughtered 70,000 of the 273,000 seals deemed killable by the Canadian government.

Canadian seafood exported to the United States contributes $2.4 billion each year to the Canadian economy. By boycotting Canadian seafood these chefs and restauranteurs are saying it is NOT okay to brutally slaughter precious seals.

  • Whoever…

    This is great…

But what about “save the chickens, the pigs, the cows, the sheep, etc.”?

They still use these animals to cook, right? And they do know that they’re also slaughtered in horrible ways, right? So, why aren’t these animals also worthy of such a campaign? Why? Because they’re not cute?

I know that, unfortunately, animals will continue to be killed for human consumption and I don’t expect these chefs and restaurants to stop buying animal products to prepare food, but they could at least start buying organic…It would be a start…

Seems very hypocritical to me. I think they need to learn that people in different countries and cultures utilize different species. Very sad Mr. Barker.

I give a world of praise for all of you
    (first-class chefs) for protecting one
of God’s animals, who have a right to
live just as we. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU,
AND BON APETITE ON THE THREE-QUARTER
VEGGIE MEALS (cutting down on all animal
    flesh).

To Johnson: There is a difference between a culture “utilizing a different species” and Canadian hunters beating baby seals to death with clubs in front of their parents, skinning them, and leaving the dead bodies to rot. Have you even seen a video of what they do? I saw a video of a mother seal laying next to her dead, skinless baby with a sad look in her eyes. It was the most horrifying thing I ever saw. Quit being blind about animal suffering. Watch Earthlings: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6361872964130308142

    I hear ya, Whoever…

But stopping dog fighting (see a later post) and the seal hunt are low hanging fruit. Getting people to get over the mindset that some animals are food and others are pets or creatures to care about is hard.

It would be nice not to see the corpses of other animals at a save the seals event.

Good cause, but it seems we have a long way to go before people realize that randomly categorizing the roles of animals according to their uses to us as humans is blatant speciesism.
