Natalie Portman No Longer Vegan? Jake Gyllenhaal Investigates

One of my all time favorite vegans, Natalie Portman, recently sat down with Jake Gyllenhaal for a chat in Interview Magazine. Half way through the piece, Gyllenhaal asks Portman about her favorite foods. Here’s how it went down:

GYLLENHAAL: Okay. What’s your favorite food?

PORTMAN: Well, I don’t think you can really improve upon Carvel ice cream cake.

GYLLENHAAL: I’m more Baskin-Robbins style myself.

PORTMAN: Oh really? I am so Carvel. Did I just bring us back to 1985 Long Island?

Now don’t freak yet! Natalie is a fairly new vegan and just because she likes Carvel, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s still eating it.

    Umm… maybe I am wrong about this, but Natalie Portman is not a vegan. She is a vegetarian. She has stated she does not wear animal products, but has never claimed not to eat them.     Yeah, when I read this earlier I was disappointed. Big wigs at the studios don’t like vegans. Carvel ain’t vegan! She also listens to dirty rap music so obviously she has turned to the dark side. Blood shed of humans and animals. So sad … but whatever.

    I love dirty rap too! Especially when I am stuck at my desk at work doing hours of data entry…so glad to see that Natalie likes it too for a similar reason…it just cracks me up what can I say ;)

    I just read that Natalie Portman has been a vegan since she was only 8 years old and she doesn’t even eat gelatin but she practices what she calls “vegan vegetarianism”. I’m a vegan but have no idea what “vegan vegetarianism” means. Maybe she means that she’s 95% vegan but occasionally eats animal products. I don’t know. I hope she really is a vegan! It seems like so many celebrities fake being a vegetarian or vegan.

    What do I think? I think it’s hilarious that fanatics could get their panties in a knot over the possiblities that a movie star isn’t a vegan. That’s what I think.

    Here’s to hoping she’s vegan or goes to a vegan diet. But, Carvel? Hmmm…. not likely a vegan would be promoting Carvel.

    Nathalie P. may not be vegan, but she is very close. I think vegan vegetarianism means being a vegetarian who doesn’t wear animal products, or “mostly vegan, sometimes vegetarian”

    Maybe the Carvel ice cream cakes are the only non-vegan thing she eats, or she eats vegan 90 to 95 percent of the time with occasional slipping.

    Who knows. Maybe y’all should interview her.

    This is what happens when we pin our hopes on the vicissitudes of some-celebrity-or-other’s whim. Is it surprising when we hear that an actor has dined out on animal? Their lives involve pretending to be other people and going to parties. Does it really matter to how we live our lives what Natalie Portman eats?

    Wwow, as a BRAND NEW vegan, it’s nice to know that IF I accidentally fall short of the ABSOLUTE that is veganism, even if still abstaining from 95% of any other animal-produced product of food, other vegans won’t get too self-righteous or judgmental, and will simply allow me to be a human-being (human-animal) who isn’t always perfect….

    It would be really discouraging to think otherwise.

    I think it’s okay if she’s still eating the ice cream.. Sometimes the transition is hard. Plus, it could still be her favorite food even if she isn’t eating it still! Give her a smalllll break. It’s okay!

    Vegans are ridiculous… dairy is good for most peoples’ health. There are insects called ‘dung beetles’ that stop C02 emissions from Cow’s feces (and yes there are dung beetles that work in the winter time as well); Vegans should stop being vegan and start promoting dung beetles if they want to help out the environment. Yes, the dung creates C02 emissions, but the dung beetles bury it all underground (where it belongs). I remember playing soccer against this vegan one time who had calcium supplements and almond milk; we bumped heads… he was on the ground unconscious and I was unfazed (literally, I don’t know how he got hurt so badly). Drink Milk.
