Jamie Oliver is in big trouble!

The “animal-loving” chef (said with the utmost sarcasm) is getting slammed by animal rights groups for castrating a bull during an episode of his new television show Jamie’s American Road Trip.

Seriously? I mean, SERIOUSLY??!

Director of Animal Aid, Andrew Taylor, says, “The public is convinced Jamie Oliver is the real deal but hopefully this barbaric act will open their eyes to the fact he is a phony when it comes to animal welfare. He pretends he cares about animals but this makes an utter mockery of that. Castrating cattle in this way is vicious and grotesque and he’s giving credibility to an ugly trade. If he thinks this is good prime time TV he has been duped.”

Oliver’s team certainly isn’t staying quiet about the incident. His spokesperson is defending the act as a method of educating people about “parts of America they might not know about.” And reminding the public that, “Jamie is well-known for his championing of better welfare for animals and has had awards from many animal welfare groups.”

    Horrible things are done to animals on a daily basis but that does not give Jamie Oliver the right jump in and take part in any type of cruelty.

    If he is really that concerned about animals maybe he should stop grilling, roasting and frying them for his lame cooking shows.

    Now, what’s the cause for such publicity? The fact that the bull was castrated or how it was done? Sure, all the better if it was sedated first, but even if not, it absolutely was better for the animal to get castrated, regardless of the methods, because the results would have otherwise been very violent, painful and stressful. In case you didn’t know, bulls that have reached the age of two must be either castrated or slaughtered (the usual option) because the herd can only have one un-castrated adult bull. The rest of them will be killed in fights between the males, often suffering for days from their injuries until they finally die. And no, they cannot be taken to the vet: if they’re kept free on a large area there will be no one to notice the injured bulls. However, this is the most natural and animal-friendly way of keeping cattle. So please, stop talking nonsense.

    Perhaps the positive outcome of this is that people who watch might realize that this was not just done when Jamie was there – this is done all of the time to millions of animals with no sedation or anesthesia. That fact should hopefully turn some people against the meat industry.

    Twinkie above claims that castration is natural. It’s true that if more than one mature bull is confined they fight, sometimes to the death – but confinement is not natural!

    Truly wild cattle organise themselves into bull-and-harem groups, and bachelor groups. From time to time bachelors challenge the harem-masters, sometimes successfully. Most fights end in the weaker animal retreating while the winner has to stay near the harem.

    There is no truly “natural” way of keeping cattle, twinkle. To claim castration as humane is only in order to support your belief of keeping cattle to be eaten. Perhaps if all human males were castrated it would prevent much suffering and pain in the long run but I don’t see that as a popular suggestion for humans. Oh that’s right, humans have a tendancy towards speciesism….silly me.

    As for Jamie Oliver, he is no “animal lover” by any means. His antics should be called what they are: animal cruelty.
