On October 16th, Ugly Betty will team up with the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign to help end the spread of Malaria in Africa — where the deadly disease accounts for 1 in 5 childhood deaths.
On the episode, Betty promotes the organization by getting the magazine to spotlight the life-saving netting material in a special fashion spread. In a press conference, Tony Plana, who stars as Betty’s dad said:
“The campaign’s been around since 2006, and I had never heard of it. For me, this was an awakening of the suffering happening in Africa. Knowing how $10 will save one child’s life is why I’m so proud to be a part of this show.”

one of my fav shows ever!
I recently read a book called DeadAid about how the increasing aid to Africa is not helping but hurting them. An example being how projects, such as this one, that donate mosquito nets to Africa are putting Africans out of business that sell these same nets. Maybe instead of donating them, they can work with the locals to keep them in business so they can continue to support themselves and their families.
I give to my share of charities. I’m not saying it’s all bad and not helpful. I do, however, think a lot of us need to be more informed and start asking more questions. Just my two cents. BTW-the book is written by an African woman.
