We’re continuing our book theme on Twitter Thursday and getting you into the holiday spirit with Anny Getty’s I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas. Yes, I know we haven’t even passed Halloween yet — but if you’re like my shopping mall, as soon as those costumes are put away, the Xmas music starts pumping. It’s maddening — but such is the world we live in.

Ah, but Getty’s new book isn’t something you should wait to open after the Macy’s Day Parade. It’s filled with great ideas for crafts, meals, gifts, and other holiday-themed eco-friendly creations. Want to make Cranberry and Popcorn Garland? Maple Walnut Cookies? Make more attractive giftwrap from newspaper? There are beautiful photos, step-by-step instructions, and helpful advice from others in the green world like “The Lazy EnvironmentalistJosh Dorfman, Lauren Bush, Rachel Sarnoff of EcoStiletto.com and many more.

  1. I’m going to green my holiday by cutting down our own Christmas tree in the Pike Natl. Forrest. It helps thin the forest & prevents trees being trucked from thousands of miles away. Also, doesn’t dry out as fast, so less of a fire hazard.

  2. We’ll be making the holiday’s greener by hosting a totally veg evening of fun with our friends.

  3. We will be making the holidays greener this year by sending out as many e-cards as possible vs. mailing paper cards. For those people to whom we must send traditional paper cards (non-tech savvy and non-computer users), we have a stack of recycled cards ready to go.

    • Yuck. E-cards are anti-holiday, anti-personal and just show you don’t care. How about supporting many of the independent artists that print cards on recycled paper? And, how about showing people you care with a bit of personal time and effort to send a real card rather than a mass button-pushing message?

  4. My family stopped giving gifts many years ago but every year I spread the word further by encouraging gift giving through heifer.org

  5. Amy:

heifer.org = animal cruelty, & increased animal agriculture (which is the #1 cause of global warmning). Thus heifer.org is only of the worst things you could do!

  6. We will be making our christmas greener by really cutting down on gifts and making or buying used presents

  7. We’ll be making our Christmas greener by sending ecards instead of mailed ones, and also using creative “recycled” fabric to wrap presents instead of buying new paper wrap, bows, etc…

  8. I wont be using any wrapping paper for Christmas. I plan on sewing reusable gift sacs made from organic cotton.

  9. I’m transitioning into a greener way of life. I think the holidays will be a great opportunity to put these newly learned ideas to use.

  10. going green-We will be re-using last years paper and bags!

  11. I’m going to try making all gifts this year. I usually give books and cds. Not sure what the reactions will be, but it will certainly be interesting! :-)

  12. I want a Green Xmas!
    please?
    deb

  13. I will be helping others learn about greening their Holidays: gifting useful items like reusable food containers, eco toys, handmade gifts, creative packaging…

  14. We have a plastic christmas tree that we’ve had for years and plan on using it for many years!
