even if CoverGirl stopped all their testing, as said by another commenter, their parent company is Proctor and Gamble.
I wouldn't support CG just for that reason, because money given to CG will, at some point, support animal cruelty due to just that.

You know, veganism takes a long time to ajust to. It's not the same as vegetarianism, where you just drop meat all together. It's not easy to just drop all animal byproducts overnight; It's taken me almost a year. I started with all dairy, eggs, and gelatin, and then started reading labels, pointing out lactose, casien, whey, glyceral, ect. Make-up became one of the last things I started paying attention to, and I'm still fighting the refined sugar bit. I agree that if she's going to be calling herself a vegan, she shouldn't be a spokesperson for an animal testing/animal byproduct make up line. But lets not go too hard on her. She's putting out an effort most people don't and deserves some credit.

It's so awesome that she's spreading the word. I never really paid attention to her before but I have a lot of respect for Ellen now. :)

Viewing some of these comments sheds some light on why veganism is difficult for some people to accept. Here is a person making changes in her life and she is still criticized for not doing enough, or doing it right, or doing it the way you would. Unless you have had a personal conversation with Ellen Degeneres, you don't really know what her initial intentions were or what her knowledge was about Cover Girl's policies regarding animal testing. You also do not know what her plans are as she moves forward. In the mean time, give Ellen and others (like myself) a break as they move toward a lifestyle that is healthier for their bodies and the planet, even if it is not on a schedule of your choosing.

JacquelineK,

Actually, you are incorrect. Cover Girl, according to Proctor and Gamble (their parent company,) still conducts animal testing. You are also wrong regarding the date of Ellen's contract with Cover Girl; she accepted the contact in December of 2008, with the print and TV ads launching in January of this year. She announced her decision to go vegan in October of 2008. And cosmetics are trivial; NOT trivial is the decision to harm animals you you may have a new brand of mascara. I think it is shameful that you would ignore this.

Not true - Cover Girl DOES tests on animals. Although they said 80% of their products worldwide are not tested, Cover Girl is still one of the largest corporations to test on animals.

Cover Girl actually discontinued their animal testing practices. But to her credit she became a rep for them well before she had looked into animal welfare issues and went vegan. She has done more good work that offsets anything as trivial as this. She's a great role model for many people to care about animals who would never normally consider the sentience of other species.

Yeah, I thought of that too. It's too bad because it sends such a conflicting message. I'm curious to see for how long she will remain the 'face' of Cover Girl. Hopefully she opts out as soon as she can.
