High integrity and Hollywood are sometimes at two opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to the filmmaking process, especially after the initial honeymoon phase. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of this. Meanwhile, anybody who wants to catch a great environmental film about Sea Shepherd Conservation Society can check out “At the Edge of the World.”

Fred Easton is correct that I was not on the first Greenpeace boat, and he’s also correct that I’m “no more nor less than anyone” else who was around in the 1970s, the first decade of Greenpeace.

People who were involved in those early years as Greenpece was born and eventually became an international organization are sometimes called “founders,” but I have an entire section on my website (www.rexweyler.com)about the founders and short bios of all the people involved, including Fred Easton.

My book, which will be used as a source for this film, goes to great lengths to pay tribute to everyone who contributed to the founding and development of Greenpeace. Particularly Irving and Dorothy Stowe, Ben and Dorothy Metcalfe, Zoe & Bob Hunter, Bobbi Hunter, and so forth. Many of these founders were not on crew the first boat. There were a dozen people behind the scenes for every person on any of the Greenpeace boats.

But really, this is just quibbling. One of the things Bob Hunter and I used to lament, was how much damage the individual ego could inflict on collective social movements. Who gets called a “founder” is quibbling ego. The real pillars of Greenpeace, the Stowes, Metcalfes, Bob Hunter, were all people who didn’t give two hoots about who was called a “founder.” They were dedicated to the issues, not ego gratification.

This is going to be a great film, and I’m really thrilled that high integrity people like the Zuckers are behind the developement.

From one who was there, I think it a little over the top to characterize Rex Weyler as a “charismatic founder”. This is a bit of shameless self-promotion.

However, I suppose those who write history have the questionable ability to interpret it to suit themselves.

Rex was no more nor less than anyone of us on that first anti-whaling voyage. (Remember ther was one woman on board. Don’t forget her!

Rex was NOT on the first voyage so he could hardly be called a “founder”.
