When the newly crowned Miss Newfoundland and Labrador, Sara Green, posted a photo of herself online draped in a sealskin fur coat, an unsurprising thing happened.

A Facebook group called “F**k Off Newfoundland — Leave Our Seals Alone” posted a photoshopped version of the original with bloody seal carcasses, with green wielding a hackapik.

“Obviously, when I saw the picture, my jaw dropped. There’s seal carcasses everywhere,” Green, 19, told CBCNews. “But I don’t regret wearing a sealskin coat and supporting the seal hunt.”

Green is now using the photo to draw support to the hunt — which, as we reported late last year, is in the dying stages in Newfoundland.

“I grew up in a family that goes seal hunting every year,” she added, “and I’m going to go seal hunting this year. I really am.”

Wow — sick.

Doesn’t hunting involve tracking and learning about an animal, and if you’re lucky, actually creeping up on it enough to get a good shot? Isn’t hunting when you kill an animal for food while you are in the circle of life, to survive in the wilderness, and have respect and gratitude for it?

How is killing unmoving, defenseless baby seals in front of their moms “hunting”, exactly?

Oh and BTW, my own family smokes and drinks but I don’t carry on that tradition- it’s stupid. Shame on Newfoundland for making their symbol Ms. Arrogant Murder Green.

Hey Fiarce, or should I say MICHAEL MCDADE! Posting with more of your fake accounts? I thought you only had a legion of fakes on Facebook.

      Loser.

  • Defiant

The U.S. has Sarah Palin and Carrie Prejean; Newfoundland and Labrador has Ms. Green. I suppose every locale has its own Clueless Child of Privelege/Public Embarrassment to represent it…

  • orcalove

I don’t think she has the guts to smash baby seals in the head. but maybe she will understand why people did that to her photo. it’s a bloody and cruel practice. I agree Don. My father was a raging alcoholic and abused my mother, you don’t see me carrying on. In addition, I was a hunter. I have given that up. Every animal has a right to live it’s life just as we do. If I can live without taking lives, that’s the way to live.
beating down baby seals for a jacket is just plain stupid.

    • Defiant

      …and disgusting…

    • Fiacre U

      Well put!

    • Adri

      I agree completely.

    • witman

Are you just ignorant? They don’t smash baby seals in the head anymore (although that was deemed to be very humane). They shoot full grown seals for their meat and fur. I am looking for a sealskin coat if anyone knows where to find one.

If you where leather yet protest this coat, you’re a hypocrite!

      • georgina0912

Interesting. Smashing seals heads is considered humane.

I saw a documentary about the seal hunt in Canada and saw a man repeatedly hit this baby seal’s head (AND YES, it was a baby, it was white, fluffy, and considerably smaller than the other seals), the seal’s eyes kept closing and opening and then in one instance you could see the blood spattering on the other side of the skull where the man was hitting. Apparently it takes a few blows to crack open the skull. Did i think that was humane? Hell no.

And i am no hypocrite either. I do not eat animal flesh or animal products products, i do not wear animal skin, i do not even use products in my house or in my face that have animal ingredients or have been tested on animals.

        And the coat is FUGLY!

  • Allison

That jacket is ugly as eff! The fact that something had to DIE for the sake of that hideous garment is BEYOND tragic.

    Epic fail.

  • http://www.thegogreenblog.info/going-vegan/3-great-reasons-you-should-be-a-vegan Michelle

OMG, this is a hoot! Too bad she still has a bit of growing up to do since she will continue to hunt seals. Ignorant!

  • Donny

I thought that picture was from the movie, “Exorcist.”

  • Mary Mays

Do you think that wearing an ugly jacket makes you look better? Why kill something so beautiful to make something so ugly. Aren’t Miss “Beauty Pageant Girls” suppose to care about pain and suffering? You are an embarrassment to all reputable beauty queens.

  • Neesan

I am in UK and do not even know who Sara Green is ,
What I do know though is that she looks absolutely hideous in her seal skin jacket and is obviously a totally incompassionate young lady .
The slaughter of these magnificent animals is a total shame on Canada , and its high time it was out-lawed.
    Thank you .

  • don miguelo

OMG I can’t believe it? What is this new forum where no one is hatin’ on Paul Watson?!!
No anti-sea shepherd trolls in this forum? Makes you wonder about what they really care about on this site…

    Anyways– Club Soda, not Seals!

  • john personna

It’s too bad we’ve messed up the balance, but the sad story I’ve heard is that if we don’t reduce seal numbers the atlantic cod will go extinct.

    • don miguelo

Or we could STOP OVERFISHING Atlantic Cod!!! The seals are just eating their natural prey, as they have for thousands of years.

WE messed up the balance, why should the seals (or the cod) have to pay for it?

      • http://vegan--japan.blogspot.com/ herwin

a seals diet is mostly other fish species that themselves are cod predators such as skate and squid. besides, most cods that are eaten by seals are the least interesting for the commercial cod fishery because of its size.
when the first europeans came to canada, they wrote down in their logbooks that the seas were abundant both with fish and seals. Its absurd to put the blame on the seals for mens overfishing and decimating the cods populations.

    • JayP

In fact ‘I’ve heard’ the opposite John…if we stop slaughtering the seals the balance may return. ‘I’ve heard’ that it wasn’t the seals but in fact people and cat food that is wiping out the cod.

  • http://vegan--japan.blogspot.com/ herwin

OMG she grew up in seal smasher family BUT UNTIL THIS YEAR SHE NEVER DID SEE IT IN REALITY ?? Well, good for her to see it this year, who knows she actually will have a change of heart seeing cute baby seals clubbed to death while mummy seal is watching. heartbreaking

  • http://ecorazzi brian caneda

    jolly good show

  • stop it

Filthy seal killers (whale killers too)

Next stop the illegal whale killers – Japan! Who are carrying out a brutal campaign with their armada of death ships.

They should have Painted RESEARCH on the side of the Enola Gay and Bockscar planes!!!

  • krissy

she is disgusting. Tiara for a torturer tyrant. She buys into the Sarah Palin ethos. People need to have respect for these adorable creatures.

  • http://empathyforanimals.blogspot.com oneandonlyhypnos

It is disturbing: and she doesn’t get her facts straight either. I wanted to share a blogpost I’ve written about all of this:
    http://empathyforanimals.blogspot.com/2010/01/sarah-green-miss-newfoundland-and.html

What she said doesn’t make any sense

    *vomit*

  • Chastity

I’m going to come in with a juvenile-yet-so-true comment. She’s not pretty AT ALL and heartless to boot? I saw pics of her up close and thought “huh? really?” She looks as if she would be one of the rejects at the dive. I really despise Sarah Palin and Carrie Prejean for their idiocy but I can acknowledge that they are good looking women *shudder*. In the case of Green, someone needs to strip her of the crown pronto!

  • Rena

Would just like to point out that in Newfoundland and Labrador it’s illegal to kill “helpless, defenseless baby seals in front of their mothers.” Harp seals are protected … Only the adults are hunted. The images you see on seal hunt campaigns aren’t even of seals that are being hunted at all. Just some food for thought.

  • SEAL HUNT SUPPORTER!!!

Do any of you, perheps, eat meat? Wear leather? Wear any fur but faux fur? Animals have to die for a lot of things, including oil! Unless you are an avid vegitarian, I don’t think you have the right to protest the seal hunt. We eat seal in Newfoundland, so the meat is not wasted! Seals are overpopulating if you didn’t notice! If we didn’t hunt them, they may just all die out!
