jamescameronWhile speculation rises over officials in China pulling screenings of Avatar, James Cameron has been awarded a PETA Proggy Award for his inspiring message of compassion and understanding in the film.

Besides the use of incredible special effects which demonstrates that it is unnecessary to subject animals to the stress of movie production, Avatar won the Proggy honor because it displays “the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of treating all living beings, no matter how ‘strange’ or ‘alien,’ with respect and dignity.”

“We hope viewers will come away from Avatar with a new way of looking at the world around them and the way we treat our fellow earthlings,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “For helping animals with the positive message of this film, James Cameron is PETA’s ‘King of the World.'”

Avatar is currently the second highest grossing film of all time behind Cameron’s other blockbuster, Titanic.

PETA’s Proggy (progress) Awards recognize animal friendly achievements in commerce and culture. The Golden Globe winning director will receive a framed certificate and letter of congratulations from the animal rights organization.
