Green Music Group: Saving The Environment With Sweet Eco-Harmony
Melding good green ecological sensibilities with crowd-pleasing music for the masses, Maine-based non-profit group Reverb and eco-sensible luminaries in the music community such as Bonnie Raitt, Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, Guster, Sheryl Crow, Linkin Park and Barenaked Ladies have come together to form the Green Music Group. Described as a “large-scale, high-profile environmental coalition of musicians, industry leaders and music fans” focused on “using our collective power to bring about widespread environmental change within the music industry and around the globe,” this tour-de-force of movers and shakers intend to create a sustainable environment on stage as well as behind the scenes, reaching out via grassroots efforts every step of the way.
This past weekend at Hollywood Boulevard’s Jane’s House, members of the Green Music Group assembled for a jam session to perform John Lennon’s classic, ““Instant Karma (We All Shine On)” but they intend to make sweet music well beyond the glare of the spotlights, too. Up until now, Reverb has been doing a fine job of transforming notoriously high-profile music tours into more sustainable affairs via organic food catering using biodegradable packaging, banishing plastic bottles in favor of reusable versions, encouraging widespread recycling efforts, ensuring that tour buses are fueled with biodiesel and reaching out to concert goers and the community through eco-awareness programs.
Founder Lauren Sullivan and Adam Gardner – the latter of Guster fame – have calculated that since 2004, they have prevented 67,000 tons of CO2 from entering our atmosphere by greening up 80 major music tours, allying themselves with 1,783 environmental groups and pursuing consistent educational outreach efforts. What better way to step up their green aspirations than by building a comprehensive ecologically-minded community composed not just of non-profit visionaries but also high profile, respected leaders who can cover twice as much territory?
Gardner explains on their website that they simply “wanted to do more – our founding artists, venues and labels wanted to do more, and our fans were calling on us to take the lead.” They will achieve their ambitions through a monthly call to action that motivates members to embrace eco-friendly lifestyle changes as well as support greener venues, service providers and compatible non-profit organizations trying to make a measurable global impact.
