Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and both Avatar and The Hurt Locker are leading the pack with nine each; including best picture and best director. In what’s certainly making Quentin Tarantino smile, his Inglourious Basterds was close behind with eight nominations.

As expected, the brunt of Avatar’s noms are in the technical categories, like sound editing, visual effects and editing. The eco-centric film is expected to sink the domestic box office king Titanic sometime tomorrow when it crosses the $600.8 million threshold.

The Oscars will be broadcast March 7th on ABC — hosted by both Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. For a full list of the nominees, jump here.
