alligator

When someone hands you lemons, the old adage is to make lemonade. But when someone hands you an alligator killed by state officials? You make a chopper motorcycle, naturally.

Such was the decision by Jim Jablon, owner of a Wildlife Rehab centre in Hernando, Florida specializing in the care of neglected and abused exotic pets. In order to raise money for the center, he took an $80,000 custom-built chopper and spread the alligator skin all over it; while mounting the head on the handle bars. A speedometer is implanted in the back of the skull.

The “Gatorbike” will be raffled off for $100 a ticket — with 1,000 tickets total being offered. Needless to say, the animals and clinic stand to benefit greatly. As well as the lucky scary person who desires a ride of this nature. If Woody Harrelson weren’t a vegan, I’d say his character from Zombieland would have been right at home on this thing.

Gatorbike will be raffled off in May.

That seems moronic. Maybe when his wife dies we can make a motorcycle from her and the proceeds can go to breast cancer.

Disgusting. This is not a trend that needs to be started, and I have a feeling that this will give other people similar ideas. Shame.

I’m sorry but I don’t like this at all.

wow…another great example of speciesism, apathy, and ignorance. What’s their motto? Is it – heal the live ones and desecrate the dead ones? This wildlife rehab clinic is an embarrassment to the non-humans they work to rehabilitate. They certainly are working against them by promoting something disturbing and disrespectful as this.

this alligator was handed down by state officials ? wow, thats a pretty fluffy way to leave out some nasty details. truth is this aligator was killed by state officials to keep numbers down. i cant track down who these state officials are but logic would say it are wildlife rangers. Cool right?, some injured animals make it to this rehab center alive, other healthy animals are killed because there are “too much” and send there to end up as a gatorbike to the same rehab center by the same people. shows exactly how “resepctful” these people are towards animals.
another fluffy untruth is that these centers dont take care of neglected exotic pets but take care of , as the name would suggest, the local (endangered and other interesting) wildlife. Last but not least the greatest benefactor of these donations most probably will be mr Jablon himself, the owner of this rehab center. cooooool. not.

This is ridiculous and disgusting. Maybe we should also take one of the people killed in the earthquake and mount their head on a car and raffle that off, too.

    • Taylor

      Anon:
Are you really comparing an alligator to the victims of the Haiti earthquake???????

      • Chastity

Do people like you like to take arguments out of context to fit what’s suitable for you? Perhaps you should get a grasp on some critical thinking.

        Chastity:
Would you please explain how what I said was out of context? The point I was subtly making is that a lot of people on this blog and many animal activists are way too radical. Don’t get me wrong, passion and enthusiasm are required elements of change. However, it is these type of comments (not to mention the violence, threats, vandalism), that turn the public away from your cause and shed an overshadowing negative light on it. Let me end with another piece of out of context words,

    IGNORANT PEOPLE:
This guy is doing something good for the endangered species of the Everglades (one of the most diverse ecosystems in America). The DNR shot a menace alligator. This guy made lemonade by raising $100k for a good cause.

    IGNORANT TAYLOR:

This is a classic case of moral schizophrenia. Look it up.

      Chastity:
Maybe you say something worthwhile. Just because you can post, doesn’t mean you should.

      • Chastity

Have you even looked up moral schizophrenia? I’m not just insulting you, I’m pointing out something that you haven’t researched properly.

      • Taylor

You’re right, I thought what you said was just a blind insult. I had never heard of “moral schizophrenia”. I still don’t fully understand what it is you are saying though. That I value the lives of cute animals over lives of alligators (though they are pretty cute when they are little)?. Fact is, alligator attacks on humans do happen (http://www.buzzle.com/articles/alligator-attacks-and-personal-injury.html). While you may be right saying, “it’s the human’s fault for encroaching on their land”, that isn’t going to stop anytime soon. So the DNR killed a problem alligator, it happened. At least this guy took what you consider to be a bad situation and turned some positive out of it by raising $100k for a good cause. Maybe that is where we don’t see eye to eye on this issue. I think taking a bad situation and making the best of it is what you should always do. Also, you didn’t post anything regarding my reply to Anon, do you agree with me?

        Chastity:
By the way, here is a cause near and dear to my heart (let the hillbilly prejudice begin) http://www.ilovemountains.org/multimedia . Just getting my word out to you since mountaintop removal obviously affects the animals.

OK all. Lets see here, I know all you PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals) really love these animals. However I must admit, the bike looks real cool. Hay, lets face it, the Gator was DEAD already. Unless one of you brainless wonders know how to bring back the DEAD, what happens to the body does not matter. At least someone will prosper and have some more funds to help other animals…

I believe the ends justifies the means.
