“I am almost a vegetarian. I do eat organic chicken and am careful what fish I select. There is a problem of overfishing; you have to ask questions. The place where you buy your fish should have the answers to questions like, where is this salmon from?

“My family life is not centered around food; but of course food is very important. I think being Italian influenced my taste — you know, not eating processed foods, never anything from cans, TV dinners.”

-Isabella Rossellini discussing her diet and the environment with City Paper. Rossellini is most recently known for Green Porno — a Sundance Channel show that explores the sex life of insects and marine animals. What do you think about Rossellini’s “almost vegetarian” stance? Chime in, chime in!

You’re either vegetarian or not. Punto e basta. As a vegetarian living in Italy I was surprised to read the other day that there are 7 million vegetarians in Italy (out of approx. 60 million inhabitants). This is apparently the highest concentration of vegetarians in any country in Europe. If that includes people who are “almost vegetarians” I wouldn’t be so surprised any more…

I absolutely agree with Martha, I am Italian as well, but I moved to the UK 6 years ago. People -no matter which nationality- should not say “I am almost something”, because it simply doesn’t make sense.
There is nothing wrong in saying “I eat very little meat and fish” if that’s what you do, and it’s much better than pretending to be something completely different!

All these people should read the new Safran Foer book.

I grew up in Southern Italy where people genuinely think that fish (and cured meats) are not meat, but on the whole I can say that I have never met anyone there who says they’re “fish-eating vegetarian”, which is very very common here in the UK.
I actually have little cards in my purse (given by the Vegetarian Society) which say that vegetarians don’t eat fish!

By the Way, the name “green porno” is awful.

Yeah, my comment wasn’t meant necessarily as an attack on Italians :) I also lived in the UK and experienced the fish-eating vegetarians, or even worse, picky eaters calling themselves vegetarian. That just changes the general perception of vegetarians and makes us all look like pain-in-the-asses…
