Kucinich, who did not originally support the initiative, gave the bill his approval after four private meetings with President Barack Obama. “The president’s visit to my district … underscored the urgency of this vote,” Kucinich said. “I have doubts about the bill … [but] I’ve decided to cast a vote in favor of the legislation.”
On Larry King Live, Kucinich spoke in-depth about his decision, expressing his desire to one day see a single-payer option and saying, “I’m hoping that as I work with the President on the next step, we can deal with the issues like diet, nutrition, complimentary alternative medicine — things like that.”
So will Dennis’ vote help pass the bill? We’ll see. A few House Democrats have refused to state their voting intentions and twenty-seven have indicated they will join Republicans in opposing the Senate plan. That still puts opponents 11 votes away from securing the 216 votes needed to prevent the bill from passing.
