Each year the Humane Society’s Genesis Awards recognize major news and entertainment media for their efforts in addressing animal awareness issues. The Cove and Whale Wars were among the winners at the 24th annual Genesis Awards this Saturday in Beverly Hills.

The Cove, which documented the annual dolphin slaughter in Japan, took top honors in the category of Outstanding Documentary Film edging out The End of the Line and Food, Inc.

In the category of Reality Series, Animal Planet’s Whale Wars was recognized for its episode titled The Stuff of Nightmares.

Bones, Family Guy, Ellen DeGeneres, Jane Velez-Mitchell, and O, The Oprah Magazine all took home awards.

Both with messages highlighting the importance of the humane-animal bond, Up and Hotel for Dogs tied for Outstanding Feature Film. While accepting the award for Up, co-director and co-writer Bob Peterson, broke out his Dug the dog voice to state, “To the Humane Society: I have just met you. And I love you.”

The 24th annual Genesis Awards airs on Animal Planet on April 24-25.  For a full list of nominees and winners visit humanesociety.org.
