With Earth Day right around the corner, the state of New York has launched the first-ever “Greenest New Yorker” contest. I LOVE NEW YORK, the Empire State’s official tourism promotion agency, has teamed up with to recognize individuals who are doing their part to preserve the environment.

In 250 words or less, applicants must explain why they deserve the title of “Greenest New Yorker” and describe what they are doing to promote a more sustainable future. All submissions must be received by no later than midnight on April 8, 2010. Entries will be judged by some of New York’s finest green celebrities, including restaurateur Mario Batali, author Josh Dorfman, actor Peter Facinelli, architect Morris Adjmi, and interior designer Robin Wilson.

On Earth Day, April 22, officials will announce the winner of the “Greenest New Yorker” contest who, besides the prestigious title, will also receive a three-day, two-night I LOVE NEW YORK Green Getaway package for two people.
