The event “kicks off” April 8th — and you can pledge your feet and enter for a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip on the next TOMS Shoe Drop here! Check out Kristen’s vid below:

this is ridiculous. shoes are harmful. everyone knows this. or should. when i first read the headline i thought she was promoting going barefoot for the health benefits. i wish i had been raised in a place where i didn’t have to wear shoes-they are lucky.

How is getting your feet scraped up, cut, infected, and burnt good for you? We’re not just talking about walking barefoot through a lovely grassy meadow or indoors.

Yea, I agree with Daws. I think you’re missing the point of what Kirsten is advocating.

At times I’d rather go without shoes, however it doesn’t take long while I’m riding my bike around to notice just how much broken glass and nails there are laying around.
I stepped on a nail once, fortunately I was wearing work boots so it didn’t go through.

I don’t think that was her point anyways. We have the option to wear or not to wear shoes if we so like.
Many people don’t have that option.

i thought this was a april 1 joke, but it seems not to be a joke ? i did read “the facts” on the link, but its rather shallow these “facts”. if people walk barefoot maybe there are reasons why they choose to walk barefoot. Its rather very denigrating to always talk about “the poor” as people they cant do this and they cant do that. Foot protection is very very easy to make and indeed is self made in many poor communities, such as from rubber tires. or sandals are made with wood or other natural materials.
are you guys sure this isnt a cheap pr campaign by the shoe company who likes to create a good image ?
btw, i walk sometimes barefoots, in the city or nature, it is AMAZING how it feels and how safe it is. apart from getting dirty like hell, the streets are amazingly soft.
maybe some people just dont wear shoes in a hot climate, because shoes in a hot climate can make some serious footproblems.

humans went many many many years without shoes. we dont need them.

    • http://www.veganjapan.net herwin

seems like you and me are missing the point what she is advocating, eh.

    • Daws

That’s a lame argument. We also went many many many years w/o condoms or toothpaste. Sure the population can survive with an increase in foot traumas and infections…but why the hell would we?

  • http://www.veganjapan.net herwin

i think if people REALLY would walk without shoes one day, they would be amazed and go WOW this is FKKKKNG great and realise all their conceptions of dangerous streets filled with glass and nails and other sharp thingies out there waiting to cut and infect your feet is just wrong.
Also walking barefoot is so healthy, to advice people in tropical countries to walk with shoes is like…duh. better send some containers with foot fungus medicine along with the Nikes for the poah.
slippers, ok, but shoes..? and no worry, slippers can be made from natural materials like has been done since ancient times, i tell ya, we really don’t have to worry about the shoeless in africa.

    • Daws

Like Ryan said, we have a choice, they don’t. It’s not like this charity is going to staple the shoes to their feet.

      • http://www.veganjapan.net herwin

actually, we have less a choiche than you think. going to the office without shoes just isnt an option for us. We are stuck with these unhealthy feetcovers.
I don’t know exactly who are the “they” in the “they dont have a choiche” but slippers are very easy to make with basic materials, and anybody needing them can and do make them, including in poor parts of the world.
maybe its not easy to accept from our western way of thinking, but there are actually people who choose not to wear footwear all the time.

we all talk bout wearing no shoes but who actually did it for one day, just as “Kristen” asks us to do ?

    • kate rios

A lot of people went barefoot for a day. My university participated as well as my friends at UNC- Chapel Hill and even Clemson had a large following. It wasn’t degrading the poor; a lot of you clearly missed the point of this campaign. Please do your research first. The point of the campaign is to raise awareness on how many children in third world countries have to go barefoot. In fact the creator of these shoes spent time in Argentina, that’s where he got the idea for the shoes. If you’ve ever been to a third world county, having no shoes is very common problem, and for those that do have a pair they are usually torn up and basically unbearable. Some children can’t even go to school because shoes are required and they simply don’t have the money to spend on what we think of as a slimily cheap purchase.

herwin, did you even READ the article??? TOM’S ARE SLIPPERS. They aren’t sending these people Nikes. They’re sending them a soft shoe made out of cotton and canvas with a thin rubber sole. That’s not a bad thing. Read the links before posting such a dumb kneejerk reaction to the article.
