The Japanese whalers think that all they have is Pete Bethune in a jail cell.

They are under some impression that they are going to teach all those anti whalers a lesson…the lesson being “don’t mess with the great nation of japan cause we are bigger than all of you and we are going to take what we want when we want and how we want”.

Thats what they want us all to believe.

The only thing wrong with that is that rest of us not connected with whaling interests don’t believe them. We don’t believe their spin, we don’t believe their lies, we don’t condone their methods of operation. The anti-whalers will not bow down to the Japanese whalers and they are not going to sell their souls for money as the associates of the whalers have done.

So there is Pete Bethune in a Japanese jail cell about to learn his lesson by the japanese whaling machine. Sure he would know that there is going to be a show trial and sure he knows that the Japanese will do what they can to make his life as complicated and as miserable as possible.

But what the Japanese will slowly wake up to is that with Pete Bethune comes a whole host of other problems for them. The first problem is that they
are going to be tied up trying to find something to charge him with. Then they will have to provide for him, transport him, the whaling industry will have to pay for lawyers and people to take care of the case for them and will have to pay people to do all that paperwork for them…secretaries will be spending time organizing and making phone calls left right and center.

Then there will be meetings between ambassadors, time spent dealing with other countries, not to mention the press.

The more you look at it, the more you see that the Japanese will be very busy for quite a period of time and all this is going to be costing the japanese whalers money, and a lot of it.

Never mind that they will be losing International standing, never mind that they will be losing face.
never mind that they will be losing money or that people will be posting on the internet about the japanese whalers or posting videos on u tube condeming their treatment of whales and of their own people. Never mind that the rest of the world already tie japan in with the cruel business of whaling. There will be more bad press zooming its way over the airwaves around the world, there will be more movies such as The Cove winning academy awards. Commentators will ask whether the japanese are treating him well, whether they are treating him fairly. The Japanese whaling industry will continue to be in the spotlight until the time that Pete Bethune is free. Until then they will have Sea Sheperd on their backs and all the people of the world who hate whaling.

Even after that if they decide that whaling is the way forward for them, even if they treat Pete Bethune as a scapegoat, they will never be free of the bad stigma that surrounds them.

At the end of the day will they be changing anyones minds on the whaling issue? Somehow I don’t think so. They will fail in this endeavor, just as they have failed miserably to reach their quota of whales in the Southern ocean for the past 6 years.

And not one person will like Japanese whalers any better.

MV SEA SHEPHERD ABANDONED IN BARCLAY SOUND

The SSCS claim the Sea Shepherd II was sold but the real truth is they didn’t want to pay what they considered unfair mooring fees so they dumped their contaminated scow on the town of Ucluelet . I’m sure the fat man’s excuse is the SSCS can’t control how their ship is disposed of after they “sell” it to someone else.

In April 2004, the MV Sea Shepherd II, located in Robbers Pass, Tzartus Island [also in Barkley Sound], was in a derelict state and in danger of sinking. On this background it could prove hard for the SS to find potential “buyers” for their worn-out vessels in the future.
And it could also serve as a reminder for the countires willing to harbour SS vessels, dodging mooring expenses, and “selling” decomissioned hulls to untraceable buyers who just leave them to rust and sink….hardly any environmently sound practice, and bad buisness for the harbouring authority.

Yes i like Japan, hotels are nice and clean, well organized, the people are polite, , went out with my japanese friends for dinner and for some karaoke afterwards, we had a great time, and to a couple of events, I wandered around the temples in Kyoto ( caught the shinkansen train there)..maybe did three or four of the maiin ones but there are so many… and the japanese gardens, museums … all very nice of course, even caught a wedding at one of the temples and have some v nice photos of same. Lots of performers in some of the bigger Japanese parks…even whole bands…Elvis impersonators…people seem v fond of dressing up in weird outfits on the street, inside a hotel you will find a different kind of dressing up for high tea..all very formal and polite, best china and white gloves etc. They are very fond of lots of sugar and white flour with their cakes. Have stayed at the ” lost in translation” hotel in Tokyo…swam in the pool there and had some lychee cocktails on the top floor bar ..one of the best hotels i have ever stayed in.

I’m here for the same reason most people go to see car races; the horrible wrecks. Car races accomplish nothing but they have a huge fan base Nautical Nincompoops is the proverbial “it was so terrible I couldn’t look away” moment. “I Am Furious,” Said the Whaling Fleet’s Leader Shigetoshi Nishiwaki.

The Japanese whaling catch this year is the lowest it has been in a long time, and the whalers place the blame of the low catch firmly on Sea Shepherd. According to the AFP: The fleet’s catch of 507 whales was down sharply on last year’s cull of 680 and below the target of about 850, said Japan’s Fisheries Agency, which blamed a total of 31 days of harassment by the Sea Shepherd group.

The Japanese whaling fleet set out for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary with a permit issued by the Japanese government to kill 935 protected Minke whales, 50 endangered fin whales and 50 endangered humpback whales. Their objective was to kill 1035 whales in total.

Intervention by the three ships of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society prevented them from taking that number. Sea Shepherd crewmembers were successful in cutting that kill quota by more than half. Their success at saving the humpbacks was 100%, and their success at saving fin whales was 98%.

Of the fifty humpback whales that were targeted, they did not take a single one.

Of the fifty fin whales that were targeted, they managed to kill only one.

Of the 935 targeted Minke whales, they killed 506.

In total, the illegal Japanese whalers murdered 507 whales.

Sea Shepherd successfully saved 528 whales- our biggest impact on the whale quota to date.

The territory declared the safe zone for whales at a gathering of the South Pacific Whale Research Consortium in Auckland on Wednesday.

The sanctuary is the 11th to be created in the Pacific region. Whaling will be outlawed in the 20,000 square km of Tokelau’s exclusive economic zone.

Consortium member Karen Sack says the addition of Tokelau to the list of territories and nations opposing whaling, will put pressure on the International Whaling Commission to enforce a moratorium on the activity.

I think you are missing the point Robert.

Pete Bethune knew what the Japanese were capable of when they hauled him back to Japan. He decided upon his course of action and he took his opportunity. We are yet to see what will happen so its no good conjecturing about the future.

Its likely that this will be a show trial for the good of the Japanese whaling industry and Pete Bethune may not come out of this well as far as time away from his beloved family is concerned.

What is so great about Pete Bethune’s sacrificial actions is it will expose the Japanese whaling conglomerate for what they are and show the world what the whalers are made of if they decide to make trumped up charges stick.

The whole point of Pete Bethunes actions and that of SS is to save whales, to help stop the Japanese whaling thugs from letting rip with their harpoons and taking these great animals out of the worlds oceans. They are fighting for whale-kind and ultimately all of mankind and the rights of future generations to inhabit our planet.

You might find this hard to understand, maybe you don’t care about mankind…or the earth from whence you sprung. Perhaps you have never done anything of note so cannot understand.

Some people are just destined to live a higher life than average I guess. Its always easier for those who don’t know what it is like to get out there and make a difference to cast false assertions against those who are out there living for real.

That meat is well on it’s way to Japan by now all that Greenpeace did was have them change vessels. The shipment isn’t a police matter it is a customs matter and their hands are tied because it is legal cargo. All this story does is prove what the whaling nations are doing is 100% legal. I’ve got news for you the IWC never banned whaling they paused whaling the IWC uses the word PAUSE numerous times on their official website along with moratorium but they NEVER say whaling “ban” because that is a conservation term and the IWC is a WHALING commission. BTW, a moratorium is a delay or suspension of an activity not an outright ban.

In an announcement that has taken the world by surprise, the Japanese Fisheries Agency has announced that after killing 59 Minke whales they have discovered they eat krill.

The Associated Press reports that the annual expedition off the Japanese port city of Kushiro harvested 59 whales under a research programme authorised by the International Whaling Commission.

The annual research expedition off the Northern Island of Hokkaido is “aimed at studying whales’ feeding patterns and their effect on fish stocks”.

There are a number of questions I have about this latest research expedition. I am hoping someone can assist me with some answers.

1. The Japanese are considered a smart race of people. So it goes without saying that their scientists must be top notch. So, why did it take them 59 whales before their clever scientists worked out that there was a pattern forming in the stomach contents of the Minke whales they were catching?

2. Why did they need to kill the whales to find out what they ate when every web site I visited after googling Minke Whales told me what they ate? (I admit I gave up when I reached double figures)

3. In this supposedly enlightened age, why – when everyone knows that ‘research’ programmes are the only way that whaling nations can hunt whales now – doesn’t everyone be adult and admit that the catches are commercial whaling and have nothing much to do with science?

4. The hunt caught 36 male and 23 female Minke whales. Does this mean that female Minke whales are smarter than males and better at avoiding the harpoons of the ‘scientists’?

5. Why did they stop at 59 whales when the research programme allowed them to take 60? Is it bad karma or something to take the maximum allowed?

6. Why be concerned with the whales’ “effect on fish stocks”? Surely we don’t have to be a Japanese scientists to conclude that if all these ‘research’ programmes carry on then, no whales equals minimal effect on fish stocks.

7. If we turn all the whales’ into research then won’t all the ships go extra slow plowing through all that extra krill that is swimming around in the ocean?

8. Why is International Whaling Commission member – Mongolia – so passionate about whaling? Are we lucky that whales would have become extinct centuries ago if the Mongol hordes went in the other direction, travelled thousands of mile to the sea and took to boats slaughtering the whales?

The native peoples right to their own countries was not recognized by various foreign powers and their land was controlled by foreigners.
