Uh oh…poor Brendan Fraser. Such a likable Hollywood actor and yet he continually stars in stink-bomb flicks that leave a trail of time-wasting, mind-melting pollution in their wake.
Playing Dan Sanders — a real estate developer pressured to convert a forest into a shiny new eco-friendly development in the critically reviled eco-flick Furry Vengeance — has done absolutely nothing to improve his long list of sorry career choices (…anyone remember Journey To The Center Of The Earth? Whooo. It’s best left forgotten.)
With 33 reviews tallied thus far via the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, Fraser’s flick has garnered what is quite possibly the most embarrassing score ever recorded…a measly 3%.
Despite the Guardian UK taking the uncharacteristic route of highlighting Furry Vengeance’s positive yet “clunky and forced” message of environmentalism, the majority of the media’s top film reviewers chose to deliver choice thrashings such as:
“For a heartwarming eco-fable about woodland critters rebelling against mankind, “Vengeance’’ has the odor of court-ordered community service. The jokes never rise above the groin. The trees look plastic, the characters more so. The animals — oh dear god, the animals.” — Boston.com
“No animals may have been hurt in this production, but Brendan Fraser was. That he bothers with films like this is dispiriting because of his talent, as evidenced by movies like “The Quiet American” and “Crash.” Those films made use of his smiley demeanor for a superficial cover, not just vacant broad comedy.” – Associated Press
“The problem, or problems, stem from the lazy, unfunny script; the weak computer-generated animals (never have God’s creatures looked less lifelike while dancing to Chic’s “Le Freak”); and the squandering of so much talent.” – The Washington Post
“Though he’s given only terrible dialogue to spout, the usually likable Fraser seems to be channeling Jackie Gleason. His bug-eyed expressions and yowls of exasperation don’t give us a lot of insight into his obtuse character. It’s nearly impossible to believe this foolish guy skittering around in his tighty whities is the same Fraser who a dozen years ago gave such a moving performance in Gods and Monsters.” – USA Today
Chin up, Fraser…there’s always The Mummy: Return of the Bandages!
