iceland volcano

Might the 2010 Cannes Film Festival go the way of the 2008 Global Green Awards?

Back then, the screenwriter’s strike ended up turning the usually star-studded event into nothing more than a role-call list of winners for a 30-minute NBC special. This year’s Cannes Film Festival is facing an even more formidable party-crasher: Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano.

According to reports, the volcano is working on producing a new round of plane-grounding ash that’s already forced France’s Nice airport to cancel some flights. From the LA Times,

Canceled flights could mean that participants in the world’s largest film festival would arrive days late, or scrap their plans altogether, leading to a potential dearth of media and stars in a festival typically littered with them.

In other words, this year’s Cannes Film Festival just might have a lower environmental footprint than usual — which, as we’ve covered before, has often been a tough thing for organizers to pull off.

If the ash is over France then you fly to Spain of Portugal and take a car or train to Cannes. If the ash is to far south then fly to Denmark or Germany and take a car or train to Cannes.

Not saying the situation won’t effect the Festival but there are easy solutions if they make a little bit of effort.

But we are dealing with celebs here. I wouldn’t be surprised if some just decided to stay home rather than take a train or car.

“Fly to Denmark and then take a car or train to Cannes”???
ha ha ha ha. 880 miles – some of it through twisting, winding mountain roads, or detouring via Central France its over 900
It will take you 2 days of solid driving with an overnight stay in between

    I agree Michael.

But Cannes is a big PR opportunity especially if a celeb has a new movie coming out, even if it isn’t being shown at Cannes. It is a chance to be seen with the right people and try and get press coverage. I expect the studios will really be pushing them to attend. The biggest stars (or those that think they are the biggest) may be able to use the volcano as an excuse, but up-and-comers and wanna-bes will still find a way.

Plus a lot of them use Cannes as an excuse to go to the Med. for a vacation, so some may already be there and others may have plans to stay for a week or two afterwards, giving them more reason to make the extra effort to attend.

For the up-and-comers, I completely agree. A steamship across the Atlantic wouldn’t be out of the question if this was my big shot at catching a break in Hollywood!
