Artsy eco-peeps may recall Ecorazzi’s coverage of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s first ever Environmental Art Prize a few months ago and our call to pull something together that creatively salutes Mother Nature.

Well, the winner has officially been announced and, despite what you might imagine, the piece of work wasn’t assembled with withered autumn leaves, blades of grass, pinecone tiles or even diluted dirt; in fact, the winner used totally conventional art supplies.

We’re excited to annouce that Ms. Saundra McPherson is the lucky recipient of NRDC’s grand prize for her depiction of a solitary bird perched on a barren tree branch, entitled Sanctus.

The San Francisco artist — who dabbles in interesting paper mosaics as well as oil on canvas — seems to gravitate toward abstract, yet often earthy imagery. In her Sanctus series, however, McPherson explores the increasingly vanishing bird populations and offers hope that humanity might one day make amends for our eco-degradation.

Her stark portrayal of a nondescript avian species superimposed on a bleak backdrop clearly represents the NRDC’s desire to draw “attention to the serious environmental threats facing our planet.”

McPherson’s portfolio will now receive the benefit of serious public exposure when it is displayed in New York City at the Nabi Gallery beginning on June 10. From all of us here at Ecorazzi, a big congrats to Saundra McPherson!
