On Friday more than 500 chefs from all over the country gathered on the South Lawn of the White House to join First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign which is working to significantly reduce the rate of childhood obesity by 2030.

First Lady Obama has called on chefs to help her cause by working to educate school children about food and nutrition through the Chefs Move to Schools program. Currently 990 chefs and 488 schools have signed up to be part of the initiative.

“Children consume as many as half of their daily calories at school, and with more than 31 million children participating in the National School Lunch Program and more than 11 million participating in the National School Breakfast Program, good nutrition at school is more important than ever,” said Obama. “Chefs have tremendous power as leaders on this issue because of their deep knowledge of food and nutrition and their ability to deliver these messages in a fun and delicious way and I want to thank them for joining the Chefs Move to Schools campaign.”

After the First Lady’s speech, celebrity chefs including Rachael Ray, Tom Colicchio, and Cat Cora who joined Obama in the White House Garden to harvest veggies and show children how to properly wash the produce.

    I think its really a great effort from our first lady. As a first lady she also has some social duty and its good to see that Michelle is doing exactly the right thing.
