In anticipation of the 23rd anniversary of Shark Week, Discovery Channel has installed a giant inflatable shark on the company’s Silver Spring, Md. headquarters. Lovingly called “Chompie,” the shark is 446 feet long from nose to tail, 113 feet tall, and 200 feet wide. If Chompie were a real shark he would weigh 84,000 pounds.
To create the massive marine carnivore replica, designers used 11,720 yards of fabric and 36.7 miles of thread, with an estimated 6,400 total man-hours for the build.
Shark Week 2010 kicks off with “Ultimate Air Jaws” on Sunday, August 1 at 9 p.m. ET on the Discovery Channel.
