Spoiler Alert!!!!!

Last night on True Blood, the over the top vampire drama introduced a plot line that we’re pretty sure we’ll have animal advocates “barking” up a storm.

Halfway through the episode, we learned that the birth family of Sam Merlotte — a local business owner who also happens to occasionally “shift” into a dog — might be involved in dogfighting. To be clear, we don’t mean that Sam’s family fights dogs, rather, we’re pretty sure they hire themselves out to dogfighters for money (because, remember, they’re half-human, half-dog). Did we mention the show was over the top?

True Blood hasn’t featured any dog-fighting scenes yet, but we’re pretty darn sure that’s where they’re going.

Seems to us that spotlighting dogfighting might be a great way to educate the public about the “sport’s” shear brutality.  What do you think? Will True Blood tackle the important issue? Chime in and share your thoughts!

I follow the show, but was sad to see the creator chose to use real wolves for ALL wolf scenes (the new season introduces werewolves) Granted they have trainers and HSUS people on the set but still… why not use computer generated models?

Hope there’s no dogfighting. Must admit I enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 more than 3.

Several of the characters are vegan in real life as I know you’ve posted on ER :)

That depends. Hope they don’t show dogfighting in a glorified way.

Shifters like Sam Merlotte on True Blood can turn into any kind of animal. They are NOT “half-dog half-man”. Sam is a loving, compassionate man who will be horrified at what is being done to his brother and will break up the dogfight. The Mickens (his birth family)are a wretched bunch and this show will in NO way glorify dogfighting. If anything, True Blood will show what a desipicable enterprise it is. I used to live next door to a family that raised horrid slathering pits for fighting. I wept everytime I saw those dogs. Luckily they were arrested and barred from ever owning any kind of dog again. Pits and Rotts are wonderful dogs when treated right, but when you feed them gunpowder, beat them, subject them to horrible conditions and name them Vicious, Felony, Murder, etc., they become….well, you guys know what happens.

Thanks for this article and especially to JoJo711 for your comment about the show. I’ve never watched True Blood, but the book series that it’s based on was recommended to me recently because of my interest in werewolf books.

Jojo, I like that you’re so certain that the show won’t glorify dogfighting and that you were willing to share it. It makes me even more interested to check out, not only the books, but also the book series.
