Inspired by 1940’s military regalia worn by German and Russian troops, Seth Aaron Henderson’s eye-catching designs helped him to garner the top prize on the seventh season of Lifetime network’s Project Runway. Striking while the iron is hot, the 38 year old has wisely melded his passion for solar technology with his obvious love for fashion-forward duds by creating a new collection – soon to be unveiled on October 9th at the turbo-sustainable, carbon neutral Portland Fashion Week — that tips its hat off to the event’s Oregon-based renewable energy sponsor, SolarWorld.
Against a catwalk backdrop of slick black photovoltaic panels, Henderson’s designs, which embrace this year’s theme “Solar Is The New Black”, will be laden with sun-lovin’ detailing although he’s mum on exactly how he’s going to make it all come together. Compared to typically clunky, utilitarian examples of eco-forward solar fashion by the likes of Ermenegildo Zegna, Abbey Liebman and Jessie Loeffler Randall, it should be very interesting to see how successful Henderson is at elevating the renewable energy technology to a couture-like level.
Eco-geeks might appreciate the great lengths with which Portland Fashion Week is rocking their greenosity. For the past 3 years, they’ve made “the production of the event itself sustainable”, including the use of eco-friendly runway materials, green cosmetic products, sustainable-certified hotel accommodations for all attendees and “100 percent clean, renewable energy” via water and power certificates courtesy of the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Sounds like Henderson has found a match made in heaven!
