39-year-old actor Ewan McGregor is hardly immune to the green scene, as is proven by his recent comments while attending a Darker Side of Green event held by Lexus at Manhattan’s Bower Hotel. The native Scotsman — who has appeared in such diverse films as Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, the Star Wars prequel trilogy and the upcoming apocalyptic love story The Last Word – was once credited as being among the top 36 celebs who drive hybrids but these days, pedaling is much more his style.

Acknowledging that urban cycling is now as hip as it is eco-friendly, McGregor says that he tries his best to ‘think green’, not only by leaving his collection of motorcycles in the garage in favor of leg power but also by occasionally building his own bicycles. Unlike his contemporaries, he doesn’t believe in “getting a new car all the time.”

The Unicef Goodwill Ambassador – who recently spent time interacting with children in one of the most financially challenged regions of Lima – recognizes his good fortune in light of how too many others lack basic sanitation facilities and clean running water in the year 2010. He’s made a point of teaching his 3 daughters (one of whom he adopted from Mongolia) how to preserve water while brushing their teeth and showering, both of which he feels are simple lifestyle adjustments that “make you feel good about yourself”. McGregor has also taught his children how to ride bicycles, noting that these days, he gets on his bike whenever he can while out and about in Los Angeles.

Catch the acclaimed actor in The Last Word with former Bond girl Eva Green, Connie Nielsen and fellow Trainspotter cast member Ewan Bremner as a man who – in the midst of the world succumbing to a pandemic – finds true love. In the meantime, Ewan shares his daily efforts to live a more planet friendly lifestyle in the video clip below.
