Almost 8 months after a massive earthquake hit Haiti, many celebrities are still working hard to help raise awareness for the devastated country.

United Nations Development fund for Women (UNIFEM) Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman recently visited Haiti to help bring attention to gender-based violence and to speak out about the critical need to support long-term initiatives that advance women’s livelihoods as part of the rebuilding efforts.

“During this trip I saw first-hand how this humanitarian disaster is impacting women and girls,” said Kidman. “The lack of shelter and security makes them more vulnerable to violence, in particular sexual violence. Yet, I have also seen the determination and resilience of women and men in Haiti to rebuild their country. Today I visited a temporary shelter for women and girls who experienced sexual violence or are at risk, where women leaders work to make sure there are medical and legal services as well as counselling and livelihood training. This needs to be done on a large scale and they need our support.”

The actress was joined by UNIFEM Executive Director Inés Alberdi and spent much of her time in Port-au-Prince, where she met with survivors and Haitian officials.

We’re happy to see that Nicole is helping raise awareness about such an important issue. Wanna know how you can get involved? Visit UNIFEM.org to learn more about this groovy organization.
