Actor Ryan Reynolds has signed on as executive producer and narrator for “The Whale,” a documentary about a killer whale calf named Luna who was separated from his pod off the west coast of Vancouver Island in Nootka Sound.

Against all odds, Luna survived without his family and eventually found companionship with humans on passing boats. This relationship sparked a battle between scientists, the government, and Aboriginal people in Canada.

Because “The Whale” is set near Reynold’s hometown of Vancouver, B.C. he felt he had a personal connection to the story.

Scarlett Johansson and Eric Desatnik are also executive producing the film.
