Michelle Rodriguez, famous for her roles in both Avatar and LOST, announced last night at the Sea Shepherd “Sea No Evil” fundraiser that she will be joining the anti-whaling org on its next campaign.

“I’m going to go on the next voyage,” she said. “So you guys are actually helping to support the next team to go out to Antarctica and bust their asses on that ship, trying to save some whales. So, I’m going to be one of those people on board.”

This isn’t the first time a celebrity has announced their intention to join the crew of the Sea Shepherd on their Antarctic campaign. Back in the fall of 2008, it was revealed that Daryl Hannah would be accompanying Paul Watson and Co down under. That commitment was later reduced to “a week” and then turned into nothing but a visit to the ship and crew by the actress. Hannah later said that a conflict kept her from participating fully on the three-month long voyage — and I wouldn’t doubt it if something similar happens with Rodriguez.

But hey, it’s great PR and draws attention to the cause. Not to mention, she’s one of the few celebrities I could see actually hacking it in the rough conditions down there.

Check out video of Michelle making the announcement after the jump below.

Fantastic! I hope they’ll show it on whale wars :)

they will, she’s a big name actress — they will show her on whale wars!!! :-)

She is a tough cookie, she will do awesome on the boat.

I think you’d have to have rocks in your head to entrust your safety to the incompetants in the Sea Shepherd Criminal Syndicate.

But anyway, what does this Rodriguez character know about saving whales? I bet she’s never even thrown acid at anyone before. What a rookie!

      • Jarrod

Sea Shepherd Criminal Syndicate? That’s clever. You must have been on the government committee that “sanitized” the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Rape of Nanking into self-defense against American and Chinese imperialism in all the Japanese textbooks.

Besides, there is nothing criminal about what SSCS is doing. Their actions towards the “research fleet” are a lot like what Japan once benevolently (and perfectly legally, according to Japanese law) did to its neighbors to “convince” them to join the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere. Except, of course, that the Sea Sepherds haven’t killed or raped anyone.

We’ll see. I honestly get the impression, from watching the vid, that this is a classic case of, “Hollywood-Actress-Who-Wants-More-Attention-Gets-A-Little-Too-Carried-Away-At-A-Fundraiser-And-Sticks-Her-Foot-In-Her-Mouth. (And yes, that was hard to type) If she sticks to it, I’m a punk for talking smack about someone I don’t know. But we just might be looking at another “scheduling conflict” waiting to happen. “Shit, I was r’arin’ to go, but my doofus agent signed me to play 3rd female lead in Waiting for Godot that weekend. Sorry (tee hee).”

  • BanTheFurTrade

I’d like to know if this means she’s renounced fur wearing. I remember seeing a quote from her a few years ago about not feeling guilty about owning several fur coats because “we eat hot dogs and hamburgers all the time.” So, according to her, one form of animal cruelty justifies another. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, dumbass! If she actually does join the crew, I hope they give her some education on that one.

    • georgina0912

I would like to think so too. I believe the food on board those ships is vegan and perhaps she will get educated about the plight of animals while trying to do more than “trying to save some whales” and getting to the bottom of what it is to be an animal rights activist.

  • RedM&M

Michael, she’s been planning this for awhile actually. I know someone on the crew and she decided to be a part of this a few weeks ago. She seems genuinely passionate about it and I would guess the only way she’d cancel would be if she landed a new movie which required her commitment in December.

    • timmy

hahaha, she would sacrifice the whales if she had a movie deal instead of a TV one :) I love that, and it sums up the BS that Sea Shepherd is representative of.

Come on, give me a break, why is the culture of whale eating worse than say american food culture?

    • Michael Raymer

I hope so. I’m just going by how she came across. That and the whole Darryl Hannah thing. If she sticks with it then I will be more than happy to apologize for my comments above. We’ll see.

Michelle is an amazing and committed individual. She has stepped up on many causes when others would only hide behind their celebrity. She is the real deal. It’s a shame people love to hate so much.
The exposure alone that Michelle is going to bring through her announcement will bring great exposure and benefit.
Let’s try to be a little more respectful.

You are the extremists that set the glass ceiling on the amount of people who will/can be involved in these critical issues. What does being vegan or wearing fur have to do with wanting to stop the illegal whaling by the Japanese?? Good thing you didn’t set the rules on bald eagles, condors, etc. People don’t have to agree on every issue in order to come together and fight on the issues they do have in common.
