Captain Planet Day is more than a celebration of everyone’s favorite blue, earth-loving superhero. It’s also an opportunity to make me feel incredibly old and dated. I f*cking love those days!

But yes, it’s true — 20 years ago today on September 15th, 1990, the groundbreaking TV show by Ted Turner premiered with an episode about oil drilling in a nature reserve. How prescient that we would still be arguing about this issue today.

Celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg, Sting, Martin Sheen, Jeff Goldblum, Meg Ryan, and others all lent their voices to the series over its six-year run.

In honor of today, we’ll be running some additional Captain Planet stories — but first, check out this hilarious collection of a few real-life Captain Planet wannabes from over the years.
