In an interview with country music station US 99.5, vegan country singer Carrie Underwood admitted that she refuses to cook meat during the holidays.

She explained to the radio hosts that Christmas was spent cooking with her hockey-playing husband, Mike Fisher, and his mother. And while the kitchen was bustling and busy, there was one thing she would never try and prepare.

The radio host asked, “Carrie, you are a vegan, and so when you’re cooking for the whole family are you opposed to other people bringing meat dishes?”

To which the American Idol winner responded, “I don’t wanna be responsible for cooking meat cause I’ll get everyone landed in the hospital.” Laughing, she added, “I don’t care what they eat, as long as they don’t care what I eat. Because some people do, some people drag you into this horrible conversation about how you should eat meat. And I’m like, wait a minute! I don’t care what you put in your body, leave me out of this,” she said.

The holidays are definitely a tough one, especially if you’re around a group of people who may not understand your animal friendly eating habits. But we’re happy that Underwood has stayed strong despite any criticisms, you go girl!

Has anyone else been in a similar position to Underwood? Any tips on how to avoid these awkward conversations?

way to go, Carry ! :-) i bet ten bucks you are not the kind of vegan girl who stuffs herself with cheese when she is drunk and afterwards trashes other vegans, but sticks to her ethical guns ! you rock the vegan boat ! Very inspirational !

Because i am a vegan i will not get near any animal carcass, nor would i prepare one for meat eaters. If someone wants to bring meat into my house they would have to ask me first, but people that come to my house know that i have very little tolerance for that, besides, i am a really good cook and my stuff is really tasty and i have never had anyone leave my house either hungry or with a bad taste in their mouths.

Even on vacation while visiting my mom’s house in Latin America i told my mom “i do not want to offend you, but i do not want to get near that zombie you have defrosting there.” She took one look at the chicken and said “fine.” She is cool, she respects my decisions and would never put me in an uncomfortable position, and so do my friends.

    Just sticking to my guns.

@herwin – no meat eater would want to be near me when i have had a couple drinks, and not because i will start snorfing cheese but because i can get pretty graphic about the stuff they eat and how it is killed. I do go to parties, but the conversations are kept at a neutral subject; if someone asks i politely answer, if someone wants to learn i politely shock them with facts.

Ahhh…no need to be a cheese-eater-vegan. What the heck is that anyway?!?!?!?!?
