Calling all of my environmental sex kittens! Valentine’s Day is coming up (I know, it’s like a month away but still, it pays to plan in advance!), and author Stefanie Iris Weiss has tips on how to be eco-friendly between the sheets.

Whether you’re in a serious relationship or looking to hook up with someone, there’s no reason you can’t stay green in the bedroom. Weiss is the author of Eco-Sex: Go Green Between the Sheets and Make Your Love Life Sustainable, and in a recent article for the Huffington Post she revealed her top eco-sex secrets, which we’ve outlined here for your pleasure (too much?).

Commandment #1: Your Skin

In this commandment Weiss suggests using natural oils, like argan or coconut, to give you healthy, supple skin. Her advice to avoid green brands that will cost a fortune, “Start with the all-in-one theory of beauty— find products that do more than one thing.”

More tips after the jump below..

Commandment #2: Getting That Morning After Glow

Here, Weiss instructs that you should make preparing for a date a sexy ritual and use products already at your disposal. The author provides a sexy Brown Sugar Body Scrub, with ingredients you can most likely already find in your home:

1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup almond oil
1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

In a bowl, stir together all the ingredients until well-blended. Spoon into a clean jar with a tight-fitting lid. To use, while standing in the tub or shower, massage 1 or 2 tablespoons of the scrub to gently exfoliate and moisturize your skin. Rinse well and follow with a rich natural oil or moisturizer.

Commandment #3: Eco-cosmetics

Yesterday we told you about Alicia Silverstone‘s latest eco-cosmetic venture, and Weiss agrees that chemical-free products are the way to go.

Commandment #4: Perfume

Being attracted to someone is all about those pheromones, right? In other words, how you smell matters. But Weiss warns that, “80 to 90 percent of synthetic perfumes are derived from petroleum, and the vast majority are full of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) that wreak havoc with your mucous membranes. That’s the same stuff in house paint; the kind that makes you feel faint when you forget to open the windows.”

Yikes. Luckily, the eco-sexpert has alternatives for smelling sweet, and suggest DIY brands where you can mix up your own intoxicating scent. “Men go wild for a mashup of rose, vanilla and geranium, while women swoon for cedarwood, vetiver, and vanilla.”

Commandment #5: Slinky, Sexy Eco-Underthings

Oh, sexy lingerie, how fun you are. And the thing is you don’t have to rely on a hemp-thong to get you through this step. Lucky for us, there are plenty of green alternatives. Weiss suggests looking for, “eco-friendly materials like bamboo and organic cotton” and offers designers like Under The Root, which made their fabrics out of reclaimed and recycled materials.

Commandment #6: Aphrodisiacs

Not up for oysters? Luckily, maintaining a vegetarian/vegan diet actually makes you more desirable, according to Weiss, “Eating less meat and dairy not only makes you more attractive, it also increases your stamina. A plant-based diet keeps you slim, improves the texture of your skin, and powerfully increases your energy.”

She has tips for those of us who believe food is the way to a significant others heart.

For men:
Basil, bay leaf, hemp seeds, grapes, pineapple, pumpkin, cinnamon, vanilla, watermelon, peach, squash, ginseng, goji berries, chiles, cayenne, mango, mustard, lavender, and figs.

For women:
Almond, artichoke, avocado, chocolate, ginger, papaya, saffron, soy, licorice, truffles, and cardamom.

Commandment #7: Birth Control Options

We have mentioned some eco-friendly options when it comes to protecting yourself, and as Weiss points out, there’s no reason to bring another carbon footprint into the world when you can prtect yourself the green way.

Commandment #8: Organic Lube

That’s right, I said organic lube. Weiss has done her homework, and found that, “Lubes are notoriously filled with awful chemicals, including parabens and other substances that you might not consider dangerous.”

Who wants chemicals down in their most sacred of areas? Not us! Luckily, there are brands of toxin-free lubes available for us to buy. Weiss suggests Yes Yes Yes, Sliquid Organics, or Hathor Aphrodisia to get yourself going.

Commandment #9: Sex Toys

Everyone has a goody drawer, right? Why not make it and yourself environmentally friendly! Weiss suggests, “For high quality, long lasting, beautifully-designed sex toys that belong on top of your night table, not inside the drawer, Jimmyjane is my go-to brand.”
