Across the pond, Prince Harry is doing his part to support wounded British Army vets by participating with the charity Walking With The Wounded, as they attempt to trek 200 miles to the North Pole in April.
The Royal heir will be joined by four men injured on the front line in Afghanistan, including two amputees, in addition to the charity’s founders, Ed Parker and Simon Daglish, and one of the world’s premier polar experts, Inge Solheim.
Now, why do they need an expert on hand with them? Well, because these dudes are kinda going to be risking their lives… again.
The team will face compacted ridges, high winds, blizzards, sub-zero temperatures, and a phenomenon called “leads,” which involves stretches of icy sea water which can only be traversed by floating across. In addition, the servicemen will have no resupply of provisions over the course of the month and will have to drag their belongings behind them in heavy carriers called polks. Oh, and did I mention that hungry polar bears abound in this region (wouldn’t some royal Prince stew be a nice treat for them!)?
“I am so proud to be patron of Walking with The Wounded,” the prince said. “This extraordinary expedition will raise awareness of the debt this country owes to those it sends off to fight— only for them to return wounded and scarred, physically and emotionally.”
He then added, “We must recognize their sacrifice, be thankful, and, so far as we can ever, repay them for it.”
Walking With The Wounded aims to show just how extraordinary army vets are, and give hope to recovering vets whose injuries may make them feel completely despondent. According to the charity’s website, they are invested in creating bright futures for soldiers who return home from battle through education projects and training courses, working with the ARC to provide funding for the re-training and re-skilling of wounded soldiers, and raising funds to Help for Heroes to assist with the funding of the Regional Recovery Centres being built.
Prince Harry is, obviously, not disabled, but hopefully his participation with this wonderful charity will serve as an inspiration for others to get involved in helping to rehabilitate these vets who risk their lives on a daily basis.
