When you hear “baby yoga” images of a mother gently massaging her child on a doughy mat may come to mind. But let me tell you something, you’d be wrong, like, terribly wrong.

The latest craze in Russia is baby yoga, and it’s a practice where you flip and swing your babies around by their limbs with the ultimate goal of creating more physically courageous and adept children… Okay.

Recently, a baby yoga video by guru Lena Fokina (pictured) went viral, and it shows her practicing the baby yoga method. It is a real thing and is extremely terrifying to watch.

In an exclusive interview, Fokina was asked what her reaction was to the negative attention this video has garnered, to which she responded, “Did they notice that the babies aren’t crying—they’re even laughing—and that this system has been used for over thirty years in Russia and the children are all alive and healthy? If you need more proof, the best thing is to come see us.”

Okay, true, the babies aren’t crying, but maybe they’re just so terrified that they’ve been shocked into silence! That’s just me playing devil’s advocate, Fokina.

Oh. My. God. There is no way that can be good or safe for their little joints. At 2 1/2 minutes she is all but giving that baby whiplash.

This is quite possibly the worst. Idea. Ever.

Physically, this is dangerous because a child’s body is not built to withstand these kinds of forces. Shaken baby syndrome is a definitely concern here — even though this woman’s movements are somewhat smooth, babies brains are EXTREMELY delicate, and it would be far to easy to make a sudden move that could cause deadly damage to the infant. What’s more, it’s possible to do harm a baby’s joints and ligaments with this kind of motion — the muscles simple are not developed enough to provide the kind of support needed to do this activity safely. Also a risk, dislocation, specifically nursemaid’s elbow: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nursemaid's_elbow

The expression on this child’s face is one of terror. Slow the video down! Watch it frame by frame! There’s no joy there. There’s no laughter or smiles. There’s just terror on the face, and splayed fingers and rigid limbs that indicate fear in the body language of infants.

Human beings are hard-wired to be afraid of certain things from birth: heights and falling are just two of them. Experiments show that babies will not cross over a threshold painted to look like a cliff, for example — they instinctively know that its dangerous. Tossing an infant around like this could cause great psychological harm to an infant.

There are SO many ways to bond with an infant, and SO many ways to help build confidence. I encourage parents to choose options that are physically safe and that respect the child’s very real emotional needs. The best way to create a confident, healthy, outgoing child is to help him or her feel safe and loved and protected in every way.

Extremely upsetting. You don’t have to have a degree in medicine to know this is horrible for this poor, terrified and in pain infant. This woman should be locked up for child abuse and a psych eval. I wonder if this sick woman would enjoy it if someone swung her around like this without an ability to ask for help or to stop it when she wanted. This video is disturbing, to put it mildly.
