The funeral for Sargent Shriver— more commonly known as “Sarge”— is being held today at Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Potomac, MD.

The founder of the Peace Corps and father to Maria Shriver, was known for his passion projects and the activist work he accomplished during his 95 years.

The man’s resume reads like a long grocery list, as he founded numerous organizations, including Head Start, Job Corps, VISTA, Community Action, Upward Bound, Foster Grandparents, Legal Services, the Shriver Center, Indian and Migrant Opportunities, and Neighborhood Health Services. This was all in addition to directing the Peace Corps and remaining an active member of the Special Olympics, which was founded by his wife, Eunice Kennedy.

About 800 invited guests were expected to file into the church to honor the man, including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Muhammad Ali, Clint Eastwood, and Nancy Pelosi. And guest speakers like Joe Biden and Bill Clinton planned to speak at the service.

In addition, Glen Hansard of The Frames sang while guests entered, after which U2 frontman Bono, Wyclef Jean, and Vanessa Williams were scheduled to sing.

We can all thank the Sarge for bettering the lives of others and allowing opportunities, like the Peace Corps, to exist.
