We’ve heard of recalls due to faulty electronics, rollover issues, and engine trouble – but spiders?
That’s the bizarre new twist on a 65,000 car recall by Mazda yesterday. The notice went out to owners of the Mazda6 model; which the automaker said is susceptible to infestation by the Yellow Sac spider. Why, may you ask? Indeed the Yellow Sac, like every other American citizen, loves gasoline – particularly the smell, which attracts the little arachnid to build its nest.
“While it’s very rare, this spider’s distinguishing characteristic is that it likes the smell of gasoline, caused by the hydrogen oxide,” said Mitsuhiro Kunisawa, an automotive journalist. “Once it smells the gasoline from outside, it will go inside. In the United States, it’s a relatively common type of spider.”
Unfortunately, this is a spider that bites with painful consequences; with flesh wounds often mistaken for the more poisonous Brown Recluse.
In addition, the Yellow Sac is also attempting to screw you at the gas pump. According to Mazda, the build-up of webs in the emission systems could lead to fuel tank cracks and possible leaks. Bastards! The Mazda6 is the only model affected due to its two emissions pipes in the back; which apparently lures the little fuel junkies to your car.
In other news, Nissan announced a new campaign today for their all-electric vehicle with the tag line: Nissan Leaf: No Gasoline. No Motherf*cking Spiders.
