Actor Jack Black played a passionate music teacher in “School of Rock,” but now he’s taking his character Dewey Finn’s love of music education to his own life.
Black’s mother alerted him to the plight of a group of high school kids from Washington: the kids had plans to travel to Disneyland and perform in a music competition, but travel expenses and a lack of funds meant that they were unable to go. When Black heard the news, he handed the class $10,000 without blinking an eye.
The kids traveled down the coast yesterday, and are set to perform at the competition at Disneyland tonight. Not only did Black fund their trip, but the star also offered to have dinner with the kids.
We’ve known for a while that Jack is a good guy, as he has supported charities like Children in Need and participated in the Prop 8 protest musical, but this is an especially generous and specific act from the actor/musician. Apparently his mother, who told him about the school group, is a supporter of music programs in her area. Black is also half of the music comedy duo Tenacious D, so music is near and dear to his heart as well.
Best of luck to the kids in their competition! No pressure guys, but Jack Black is really pushing for you guys to win this thing…
