This evening, on the one-year anniversary of the tragic 2010 BP oil spill, HBO will premiere “Saving Pelican 895,” a dramatic documentary that focuses on the story of one oil-stricken bird and the efforts to save it.

Over seven thousand birds ultimately perished as a result of the estimated 4.9 million barrels of crude that gushed into the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks to the incredible efforts of four different agencies working together to clean, heal and release the stricken animals – 1,200 pelicans were saved. This is the story of one labeled simply as “Pelican 895″. Check out the trailer after the jump below. The doc airs tonight on HBO at 9PM EST.
