With less than 48-hours until the supposed end of the world, the Center for Disease Control has published an amusing public service article that taps into our culture’s love for the living dead.
That right – the CDC is promoting emergency kits and strategies under the umbrella of a future zombie apocalypse. It’s all very tongue-in-cheek and a very clever way to grab the public’s attention concerning what is a very serious topic.
“The rise of zombies in pop culture has given credence to the idea that a zombie apocalypse could happen,” writes Assistant Surgeon General Ali Khan. “In such a scenario zombies would take over entire countries, roaming city streets eating anything living that got in their way. The proliferation of this idea has led many people to wonder “How do I prepare for a zombie apocalypse?” Well, we’re here to answer that question for you, and hopefully share a few tips about preparing for real emergencies too!”
Khan goes on to list items such as water (1 gallon per person, per day), food (non-perishables), medications, tools and supplies, and other items. In terms of the living dead, you may also want to pack a flame-thrower and/or an axe.
Not to leave zombie fans wanting more, Khan also describes how the CDC would handle a real zombie outbreak.
If zombies did start roaming the streets, CDC would conduct an investigation much like any other disease outbreak. CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management and care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine).
No matter, researchers have already declared that humanity is screwed should such an event go down. Enjoy the next two days while you’ve got ‘em!
