People always tell you to write letters to your elected officials to try and make a difference in the laws around us, but no one actually bothers to do that… right? Not the case for singer Leona Lewis who recently penned a letter to her Member of Parliament asking them to support a ban of animals being used in Britain’s circuses.
“I am shocked and outraged that there needs to be a debate about whether it is okay for wild animals to perform tricks in the big top,” the 26-year-old wrote. “I add my voice to this campaign and to the World Society for the Protection of Animals, who is lending its support to an alliance of animal welfare groups campaigning for an end to this.”
The vegetarian and animal rights activist then added that she hopes her speaking out will inspire others to do the same, “I hope that people write to their MP as I have, to ask them to vote for a ban when Parliament discusses it on June 23.”
