When’s the last time you’ve read a fiction book on climate change?

Yeah, I hear the crickets too.

Verso Books aims to solve the dearth of books in this genre and has enlisted big-time authors Margaret Atwood and David Mitchell, among others, to contribute to “I’m With the Bears,” an anthology bound for bookstores this October.

The pub date of this collection is well timed — because, as you can imagine, these tales are no light, beach read. These short stories envision the terrors of impending climate change. Take Mitchell’s “The Siphoners,” for example, that speaks of world where oil sells for $800 a barrel.

The royalties on the sale of “I’m With the Bears” will benefit 350.org, an organization fostering a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. In the introduction of this book, 350’s founder, environmentalist Bill McKibben, points out that “Imagination is the key here – until we’ve really understood at some gut level what kind of a threat we’re facing, we’re unlikely to act with enough commitment. Art gets at the gut.”

Here’s looking forward to this approach to addressing such an important topic!
